Supercharger + Flex = Cracker Windshield?

I just tracked my supercharged brz at NJMP for the first time (did many pre-supercharged) and at some point developed a crack from the bottom of the passenger side of the windshield. Talking to the BMW track rats, they said it's expected now that I have more power because the car will flex more, and recommended some cross-bracing. Then they showed me their E36s that all had the same crack (though not as big) Of course I just replaced the windshield (with Pilkington glass) in March.....

Any way, has anyone else experienced this issue, and/or agree with the suggestion?

Thanks.

imo that seems like a silly thing to say, otherwise stoplight warriors and dyno queens would crack windshields too. I'd bet if it has to do with driving hard it has to do with cornering loads and you'd be just as susceptible at 200 hp as 600 hp if you can chuck it into a corner hard enough.

I find this very strange. I've been tracking super charged for a little over two years now and developed no cracking. Maybe it was unfortunate enough that a small debris hit your windshield, but hit it so fast that it caused the glass to track? Just speculating here, probably not the case, but I'm sure of what would cause the windshield to crack... :iono:

Based on the position of the crack - it starts on the edge of the windshield - i don't think it could have been a rock because its below the hood. Though its possible something was "popped up" by a car in front of me and I was just unlucky.

It also showed up between sessions, but I don't know if that means anything.

"Cracker Windshield"

Whoa man, slow your roll

As a note, windshields sometimes crack, chassis flex is sometimes blamed but sometimes something just isn't quite right, nothing is failure proof.

I don't see an impact mark (the photo is misleading) but it definitely seems like a strut bar wouldn't have made any difference, based on the response here and even from Perrin (who actually sells them).

Sounds better than a redneck windshield

I've got several track days on my e-85 supercharged FRS with no additional bracing and windshield is just fine.

The first winshields I had to replace in this car was a rock hit below the resting will shield wiper. Crazy hit but it can happen

You said tou reciently had winsgield replaced.

Possible flaw or defect in new windshield
Or in correct install may jave contributed to crack

Plenty of high hp guys tracck cars cracked windshield dont appear to be routine failure

dattran86 10-26-2017 09:27 AM

it could be just rock, or something that hit your windshield.

it could be a cool story to tell your buddy tho,

ya man my car is too fast, it cracked the windshield.

And comparing the endpoints of those three cracks before and after your infield excursion ( ;) ), it doesn't look like they moved at all. I'd guess that your chassis was under FAR more stress as it bounced across the lawn than stresses seen from increased engine output, so even less likely that OP's crack was the result of chassis flex. I've had a brand new windshield crack just days after installation (different vehicle); upon examination at the glass shop, it was determined it was simple installation error.

I had my windshield crack a few weeks after I purchased the 86 new from the dealer. The origination point of the crack was at the bottom right corner. To look at it you would have thought it was not possible for a stone to hit the screen at that location. It's not, I heard the stone or what ever it was hit the screen.

Later that day when the sun went down the small chip in the corner turned into a full blow crack across the screen.

D@m the car was 3 weeks old.

It's the windshield. The chassis on this car is incredibly rigid.

Noticed the thread today. Was going to say the same.
