STI JDM Short Shifter

Has anyone on the forum actually installed one of these? They don't seem to be very common since they're a JDM part. Was considering the Kartboy shifter until I read about all the buzzing and rattling issues. Thought this might be a better alternative, even though it's more expensive. Can't find much info on it other than it's physically 4mm shorter than stock though. Would love to hear some feedback from anyone who's actually used one.

There's a member who lives in Italy that put one in about a year ago and he likes it better than the Kartboy that he had installed earlier. It's written up in a thread that mentions a lot of other JDM BRZ parts. I don't remember the member's name . You'll need to do a search.

Not sure I have much good info, but I just installed mine and like it. However, I didn't come directly from stock to it. I liked the stock shifter, but just wished it had slightly shorter throws. I went to the IRP shifter for a bit and didn't like the amount of effort it required. Also, there was the noise issue that I mostly solved, but still persisted in 3rd gear especially. I'm enjoying the reduced effort going to the STI shifter. I think it costs more than it should, but the other options didn't appeal to me. I can't compare shift throw distance directly since I haven't had the stock installed for a while, but the stock was about 10-15mm longer throw (measured at the top of the knob on the pattern diagram) than my 05 WRX with a Perrin shift adapter installed. Now it's only about 2-3mm longer throw.

I have one. I went from a trd usa short shifter to this. So it was a big improvement due to the known issues with the trd one. Right away, I was very satisfied and could tell the throws were very precise and smooth. Very minimal effort. I do not have any vibration noises or chattering at all. I would recommend this product, but as mentioned, it is pretty pricey for what it is... It would go great with a heavy shift knob. I use the sti duracon knob and that is very light weight. Stock knob would fell awesome or aftermarket heavy one.

Thanks for the replies on this. Sounds like this is a pretty good part. I guess my main question now is just how much shorter are the throws compared to the stock shifter? I know the Kartboy is advertised as being 28.5% shorter. Based on what I've been reading, would you guys say the STI is at least 20% shorter throws?

I'll measure again when I get a chance, but I think the throw is around 85mm measured on the top of the stock shift knob, from 3rd to 4th gear.

Where can the STI part be bought? Does it increase the effort to shift?

I got mine from japanparts.com. I can't give a great comparison on effort since I ran the IRP for a month or two. I guess theoretically it should be slightly higher, but I have the Mtec shift springs with it and am very happy with the shift feel.

Just measured again. Getting about 77mm on the sti shifter measured on the top of the stock knob from 3rd to 4th. Anyone have a stock shifter measurement?

Just measured my stock shifter, 3rd to 4th (2017 BRZ) -approx. 87mm

I have the JDM TRD, love it, slightly shorter throw then the JDM STI I believe as well.

I believe the JDM TRD and JDM STI short shifters, like many parts in these cars, are identical and would be unprofitable/counter-intuitive for them to be different parts.

I have the JDM STI shifter with TRD shift knob (which also shortens another few mm, I think 2mm). I felt it could be shorter so I added the TRD USA short shifter bracket. Shifting requires a noticeable bit more effort but feels perfect now.

I haven't had issues with the TRD USA short shifter and made queries on this forum on why people have problems. Seems like the vocal few who have had problems either mis-installed (instructions are not that clear) or got a defective part (may have been revised). Seems like most owners who correctly install this part (I would say an overwhelming majority because TRD hasn't pulled this part off the shelves) have had no problems but they don't post so the problem gets blown up when only people with problems post on the forum.

Thanks, mind measuring what the STI plus USA TRD gives you for throw length for comparison?
