Vacuum for Oil Change?
 

Hey guys,

I was looking into getting a vacuum pump for oil changes. Any recommendations or steps I should take you guys recommend?

I've used one for years. Once tried you'll never go back. It's what the dealers service department will use.

Only tip would be to make sure the oil is warm so it flows.

Serious question:

If you push a flexible sucker tube down the oil dip stick tube, how are you going to insure it reaches all the way to the bottom of the sump ..... since the tube makes that sharp bend where it goes into the engine ....... ??

Or, is there another way into the sump ... ??

The vacuum pipe is flexible and you can tell when it reaches the bottom of the sump as it stops going in any further.

Well, yes, it's flexible, however it looks like the bend it the tube would direct the vacuum pipe towards the back of the sump and not down to where the bottom of the sump is ....... :iono:

Now, tell me just how you know you are getting all the food out of the bottom of your food dish ......:confused0068:

Works well. Run the car for a couple of minutes to warm up the oil; clamp the vacuum tube, pump 35-40 times, insert the vacuum tube into the dipstick tube until you feel resistance, open clamp, suck. Total time: ~10 minutes.

Empty the container into an empty 5 qt oil jug to make sure you sucked all the oil out. It should fill the jug with ~1/2 qt of oil left in the container.

In 4 years I've used only this method to change my oil.

If you have problems removing all the oil you can remove the dipstick tube by removing 1 small top bolt, pull the dipstick tube out on the bottom (held in by a small O ring), and insert the vacuum tube directly into the sump.

OK, folks, here is how it comes down when Scrappydoo (SD) goes into a shop to have the oil changed by a technician (T).

SD - I'd like to have the oil changed in my twin

T - OK, but we use a vacuum device to remove the used oil

SD - fine, but can I watch?

T - sure, see, I'm inserting the vacuum tube in as far as it will go. Now, I turn on the pump ....see bubbles ..... ahhh, here comes the oil, see it in the container. Now, hear the vacuum pump running freely, and only air bubbles in the container, so all the oil is out of the sump.

SD - ah, cool

SD - as he is paying. How much oil did it take to fill it back up?

T - about a quart ..... I reckon your car has a small oil sump.

SD - yep, I reckon so

I prefer a drain valve. Fumoto makes a great one.
I've never seen a dealer except Mercedes use a vacuum though. Most new cars don't even have a dipstick anymore to use for that.
I don't like the idea on our weird dipstick setup though. It's hard enough to get a consistent reading on the damn thing. If it went directly into the pan It'd be better.

I remove the entire tube assembly. A single 10mm bolt and 25 seconds has it out. I shove the biggest hose I can in the remaining hole and pump away. When the oil is almost completely evacuated out of the sump start to move the hose around a bit to make sure you hit the lowest point you can. Granted, while the oil is pumping out I drain my SC oil and refill so I don't mind it takes slightly longer than draining from the bolt.

Crack the drain bolt after you vacuum all the oil you can and be slightly surprised that virtually no oil drips out. I've used my pump on this car for the last 30K miles, and my old E36 for easily double that.... if the oil filter is on the top of the engine, it makes for a nice easy oil change.

I crawl under the Saabaru to drain oil because it doesn't require ramps to get under and the oil filter is underneath the engine, negating the "clean" aspect of a vacuum oil change with a top mounted filter.

I was very skeptical at first, but I see the value now.... also helps with draining/filling other fluids as most models have a pump feature to empty the contents into disposal jugs.
