What Short Block did I get?
I like many of you buying the 2012/2013 BRZ also experienced a engine breakdown a few months ago (spun bearing most likely) after only 57000 Km of road use. Reason for me not knowing is that the workshop did not open up the short block but just noticed a massive amount of metal residue in the oil. They ordered and installed a new short block on my cost since Subaru Nordic do not admit any issues with this first generation engines...
I was told that the first year engine was only produced this year and that from the second model year, many modifications was done (oil supply and rod bearings perhaps?) Now to my question how do I know if I got the modified block or an old / bad one that may break again? Changes in 2014 were all valve train related on rockers and valves for the most part. the bottom end has been the same for the life of the existence of the car.
That being said part numbers will change if another subcontracted manufacture produces parts. i.e contract ends with a company that produces the case bolts. new contract signed with another company to produce an identical item at same specifications. You now have a new shortblock assembly part number reflected because the case bolts are a different part number. As for your warranty what is it in km? 50k? |

On a stock well maintained car thats street driven, there isn't much of a "known issue" in regards to the oil system
The only people that run into issues regarding the oil system are those that really track their cars hard and forced induction guys. In most cases a heavier weight oil and a good oil cooler helps. The biggest issue is a drop in pressure in the higher RPM band under higher heat situations. The number of engine failures is actually quite small, it just seems like a big issue because most of the guys having these problems post on here lol. |
part numbers change all the time... supplier, different trim/model, different year, different parts cost, etc etc...

I've had many many cars over the years old and new and this is the first one ever where the engine has self destructed and it costed me 7500 USD to fix. When searching the Internet I find many other people with exactly the same experience, it's natural to wonder how to avoid it to happen again. I love my car and it's completely stock and has always been.

I can't read it but in the US, the powertrain is good for 60k miles or 5 years. |

Yeah, there was a pdf circulating on here that showed the built up areas, but I can't find it right now. Either way, just pointing out that the blocks aren't all the same. The question of whether there have been oiling improvements is different, and one that I don't know the answer to. The horsepower limit is purely academic for me - I'll always be n/a.
