Nameless Axleback Mufflers
 

Currently considering the Nameless axleback but I'm not sure which one would be best? I know a lot of guys on here have the 5" and like it but haven't seen much on the no-muffler and 4" muffler options?

My goal is to have a nice growl but not have it be obnoxiously loud (setting off car alarms, drawing unwanted attention, waking up my neighbor two houses down in the morning, etc.). No plans to further mod the exhaust if that helps.

Anyone know if the 4" is dramatically louder? How loud is the no muffler version (obviously it's loud, but how loud)? Any other options I should consider instead of Nameless?

(I've tried searching but could only find: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50102 and that only has a 3' inlet with a 4" muffler)

I'm also looking at one of their axle backs. I found the muffler delete is actually illegal in Ca, it also seems pretty loud. I haven't seen much on th 4"

Yeah, it's a shame on the 4". I really want to know what it sounds like since I won't be doing any other mods to the exhaust so I figure the 4" might work? I just don't want to be setting off car alarms at work. My car already sticks out among a sea of Priuses, SUVs, vans and Accords. I don't need to set off alarms while I'm at it.

I see you're also in the Bay Area. Mind if I ask where at? Regardless, when are you thinking about getting an exhaust? And what other ones are you looking at? I'm also looking at Corsa but it's almost double a Nameless.

Many people are running muffler deletes. I'm running a Berk Technology one (only exhaust mod). Daily driving normally, I'd say it's quieter than a V8 Mustang or Camaro. Under WOT tho, it gets obnoxiously loud.

Yeah sucks about the muffler delete, it also will fail a smog inspection. I live in northbay near Petaluma and cops are huge ****s around here.

I'm still in the research phase but I'm looking at the nameless axle back, also the over priced TRD catback. The borla axle back also has me interested, I'm mainly looking for a different note but still pretty quiet. Nothing has me sold yet, the TRD appeals to me most but that price tag....

I also have even less rational stuff I eyeing like some louvers and fancy struts and engine dress jazz as well as some tools I need. It's hard to pull the trigger on stuff when I still owe on the car but very tempting with my tax refund.

If you want quiet, you should stay away from any muffler deletes. I think one of the Greddy mufflers or a Perrin (resonated) ones would be your best bet. I think the Nameless ones are on the louder side (but they sound really good).

Also, I'm not making a connection on how an axle back will make you fail smog test (it doesn't affect emissions).

True. I can't count how many straight-pipped Mustangs and Camaros I run into on my commute. That said, I don't think I can do a full muffler-delete since it would probably draw too much attention for my liking. If it was on an actual fast car like a 911 or M3 I could maybe be on board.

Shame about Petaluma. I'm in the south bay and the amount of modded cars is ridiculous. In fact, I get ignored by almost all the other BRZs because I'm stock :cry:

For the price of a TRD I would consider the Corsa catback.

Or you could do what I am thinking and do ST coilovers and the Nameless. Those combined might be the same price as the TRD, louvers and some of the engine furnishings you're looking at.

What I meant is a vehicle without a muffler could fail smog if the guy isn't cool and he sees it. Nothing wrong with axle backs or catbacks as long as it isn't above the db limit around cops.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm gonna look into these. Any other recommendations are welcome, I really want a low volume exhaust that allows me to rev up without turning heads, also a better note.

I'm still not seeing the connection. As long as it's the stock header and intake, it should pass smog. Smog test centers don't test decibel ratings. I took in my GTI when I had it, and it had a ridiculously loud Flowmaster muffler on it. That car was louder than my FR-S with the muffler delete. I heard it blocks away after I sold it.

I'm in no way defending it or trying to explain the stupid logic. I actually called the CHP office to check what the laws are and he said there is a specific violation for the absence of a muffler. It is not likely the average cop would look under the car, it's the smog place I worry about being a **** about it. Once your car is 6 years old it will need to be smogged so still a bit away but my worry remains.

The most common violation that normally invites further inspection by cops is the noise limit which I can't recall at the moment. Knowing Cali it is probably way too quiet. Makes no sense because those Harley's and other trucks make far louder noise than the limit but don't get called out because it is stock that way. Most people break this law and just keep quiet around cops which works but not always.

I'm thinking it's literally an axleback missing so that exhaust fumes cannot escape out from the rear of the car. Could be wrong tho, but it's the first I've heard.

The dB limit is 95dB btw.

You don't happen to know how that's measured do you?
I've read 95dB at 20 inches to 20 feet and everything in between...same with the RPM's. There's an SAE document online somewhere that details the test guidelines but I got a headache by the second page.

I'd probably have a problem either way. :thumbdown:
