BRZ Roof Strucutre Queries
 

I have been scouring the inter-webs in it's infinite wisdom trying to find information about the roof structure of the BRZ after I saw this video from Newport Convertible Engineering:

I can't tell if the steel piece that runs down the middle of the roof between the driver seat and passenger seat is part of the chasis or if it is just a midspan support for the roof sheet metal. Here is an image from Slyphen showing the piece I'm referring to:

What is that piece of steel doing? If it were removed would it affect the way the car behaves/handles?
