Is this engine sound normal?

Hi guys,

I'm posting this on behalf of my friend who does not have access to internet. He is in the market for a new 86 (and swaying me to sell my STI!) and has come across a few he is interested in.

One is a 2012 GTS Auto, however when looking at the car, the engine has a rattling sound. We're unsure if this is normal as we thought the engine should sound more powerful for what it has, and this just sounds tinny and a little rattley.

Can anyone advise if this sound is normal? As this is will greatly help him in decision in purchasing the car.

We've tried to find a few comparison videos online and it doesn't sound similar, or are focusing on other issues.

Oh man. These engines make all kinds of noises.

That sounds normal to me.

Sounds like a Russian farm tractor so...perfectly normal.

The injectors on these things sound like an old V8 that was about to throw a lifter at any second. Just the nature of the beast.

Sounds like the FA20 engine in my FR-S.

Was that on that car of yours that you didn't change any of the fluids or spark plugs for 250,000 miles ......??

Thanks for the replies guys! Just didn't sound like an engine meant to be in a car looking like that haha. Almost weak!

They are noisy. You should hear a 911, though. Then you'll know it's the sound of cool.

Hmm.. noisy isn't really how i'd describe. Maybe warmed up. To me it just tinny and rattly, but i have heard that is how boxer engines sound.

Yup, boxer engines and sewing machines.

I said V8 so no. They got new plus every few thousand miles since they needed it. Always changed oil just not tranny fluid so it would not change the engine noise.

It sounds normal. The idle sounds a little fast like you just started the car, but those valves clicking sound is normal. After running a few mins with 91 octane you may hear some chirping from the injectors also normal. It is so true these engines make lots of different noises.

RL_BRZ 06-06-2017 04:23 PM

That's normal... :-)

nothing out of the ordinary to me
