Low budget exhaust

Hey guys, I'm new here and i need your help to solve my problem with my 2017 Brz. I got the car a month ago and i'm really satisified with it but i have only one problem, the sound. First of all, i have some noise that coming from the area of the gear knob, it sounds like a ruttle and it come when i accelerate to high rpm, do anyone know where is it come from? It makes me crazy!
Second of all, the car is to quite for me and i search some exhaust part to fix it. I want some muffler/ catback that will sound stronger and deeper sound (not just loud) but will not drone too much in highway speed...

Cherry bomb on the mid pipe + Berk Muffler delete. Low and loud, minimal drone but it roars when you stomp the loud pedal. I got a used Berk dual muffler delete for $140, the cherry bomb is like $30 and a shop welded it on for under $100. It sounds great.

Ok, thanks. What about the annoying sound that come out the gear stick?

Is it an aftermarket shift knob or stock? If aftermarket, the thread adapter could be rattling inside the knob (believe it or not). If stock knob, then the problem could be a loose bolt in the shifter assembly. Check this first.

After that, you'll need to turn on the car, and listen for the rattle, then attempt to dampen the rattle with your hand to first see if it's a trim piece that's loose. If not that then it's probably a bolt loose in the shifter assembly.

Also agreed with @guybo, the muffler delete + cherry bomb was the best less than $200 sounding solution I've heard on the board (deep, little rasp, not cheap sounding). Check YouTube for videos.

If you don't want to go that route, then the Works Axleback Muffler is relatively inexpensive ($400.) Sounds good and bolts up easy (as you don't have to remove the mid-pipe or front pipe). A few other companies make Axleback's all in the same range.

At $550, if you want a new catback the MXP Comp RS sounds incredible has little drone and no rasp. It has a very deep tone. It's also made by Mackin so it's of good quality.

Above these in cost I would check for someone's used Catback at about $600 off this board. It's easy to find people selling Catback's worth $1k for $500-$700. You'll get something nice for not a lot of money as some people change exhaust parts like most change shoes. GL/HF.

Which cherry bomb i have to attach to the muffler delete? And about the noise, my car is totally stock and it doesent come from a trim piece. Where the bolt is located?

You will add header down the road, op?

guybo 05-31-2017 01:10 PM

Cherry Bomb 87521 Glasspack Muffler

I had it welded on to the rear of the mid pipe before the rear flange. With the Berk dual exit muffler delete it wasn't all that loud with the cats. Deleting the rear cat made it a lot louder.

Menashe123 06-02-2017 01:29 AM

If i dont want to touch the midpipe section, do i able to put some cherry bomb after the rear flange, towards the rear axle?

guybo 06-02-2017 06:20 AM

If you had a single exit muffler delete that came out on the passenger side, yes you could cut into that. But if you have a driver side single exit or a dual exit, there's just no room to put it in line. The distance from the flange to the muffler or driver exit is really short, go look at it

FYI remember you car has a new car warranty so the rattling you're having take it back to the dealer.

IMHO look for a used catback or save up for a Invidia N1 catback which is hella loud. If you're thinking down the line to get a header the catback you choose could also make your car LOUDER. Invidia N1 & Tomei are the loudest catbacks that I've heard in person. ;)

Perrin 2.5" resonated is great for more volume with no rasp or drone... even when you might later on decide to upgrade header or front pipe

Did you ever figure out this rattle thing. Its not real bad on mine but when you floor it there is a slight rattle sounds like coming up through the shifter area. Mine is a 2017 86 or is this common with the design maybe a high end shifter or bushings help?
