Engine rattling noise while idling

I noticed today that my GT86 makes this weird rattling noise when it is warm and idling.

It sounds exactly like in this youtube-clip:

Has anyone here had that problem? The car is still under warranty, but i'm guessing they will try to snake their way out of it.

Hi ya, skogs ....... well that don't sound like mine.

Back-in-the-day, if it had solid lifters, I would have said the a lifter is out of adjustment; if it had hydrolytic lifters, I would have said the a lifter is stuck.

Now, today ...... I'm never sure.

What power mods do you have..??

Did you car just start doing this .. ??

Are you sure it's not the HPFP doing its "cricket" thing .. ??

What's the last thing that you messed with under the hood..??

You may wish to try to isolate the source of the sound by using a stethoscope (or a long screwdriver with the handle up to your ear and the other end touching various suspect parts).

Come back.

Is it an automatic?

skogs 05-25-2017 09:48 AM

The car is completely stock. Automatic.19k km on it. I just bought it the other day.

Maybe its normal? I just didnt expect it to sound like an old diesel. Could be HPFP, but i've heard that described as very high pitched.

The clip you linked is also an automatic with a failed vacuum pump coupling. It is driven by the rear end of the 1-3 intake camshaft (right side).

Could this affect shifting? The shifts are not exactly smooth.. jumps forward shifting up, and almost locking the wheels on certain downshifts. Typically in low rev low load condition. Feels like an amateur shifting in a manual.

No but get it fixed anyhow. Warranty.

To be clear, it's the 'slapping' sound that's the problem in that video, the ticky-tacky noise is normal.

Here's a few 'normal' engines.

Oh, so that's the way it's supposed to sound. No worries then. Thx!

Wait. You don't have the actual sound from the clip that you linked?

FRS Justin 05-27-2017 01:24 PM

To me it sounds like a rocker arm issue but its hard to tell in the video. I would get a long metal bar and place it on the rocker cover and listen to it.

They can be hard to differentiate. That clip was verified to be the pump IIRC.

Agreed. bar, screwdriver, stethoscope...
