there are 2 panels, one on each side that pop off. They look like little squares. Then you are able to use a small screwdriver release the springs that hold the airbag in place. When that is out of the way you should be able to work on removing the steering wheel.

I am trying to remove the same piece but can’t figure it out. Does anyone know if there is any video for 2017/2018 models on this?

I also need to know how. The steering wheel and airbag mounting are different from the previous FRS/BRZ. And every parts diagram I can find for the "2017" 86 is the same as the older FRS.

I have searched for everything I can think of and no joy. Please help!

I ordered the black trim replacement and never stopped to think whether or not the process would be different since I have the bluetooth/audio controls on the steering wheel. Guess I'll have to hope for the best!

Just remember to disconnect the battery first. The airbag shouldn't go off but if you short it out just right (well wrong) you are in for a surprise.

Can you share the part number for the black steering wheel trim? I've been looking for this.

If your steering wheel has the audio and bluetooth controls, you need the expensive one. It comes all of the electronics. Just had to order it, came out to about $170 with shipping. PN 83154CA120

The ~$20 is for the older/base model steering wheels with no electronics. I'm not sure on the official part number on that one but if you google "(brz/86/frs) black steering wheel trim" it will come up on tons of sites.

And yes @Tcoat, I will definitely disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes
