approaching 60,000 miles

So I am approaching 60k miles and I will be taking my car to the same dealership I always take it to for oil changes. I know there are a bunch of stuff recommended for 60k service like replacing spark plugs and what not. will they recommended that stuff to me or will I have to bring it up to them when I talk to them? My car is in there system so they know my mileage and what services ive gotten done.

They will recommend all that stuff that is mentioned for 60K service and much more stuff that you most likely do not need... its best to learn yourself what you need to change or not.

The car comes with a book that tells you what you need to have done, say no to anything that isn't in the book, bring up anything they forget, make a list, check it twice, find out if your dealership is naughty or nice.

And if they're naughty, shove some coal up their tailpipes!

If you are approaching 60k (and your warranty will all be gone), you should just take it to any qualified, reputable mechanic that knows how to work on a Subaru.

You can go to a dealer but you just pay more for labor with no benefits since there is no longer warranty coverage. But, if the dealer is the best mechanic you can use, then by all means use them...

It's different from one dealership to another. The one I go to never recommends anything, they leave it up to me and only work on what I tell them (when I needed my spark plugs changed). I've been to others where they recommend stuff I can do myself (tire rotation, oil changes, etc). It all comes down to how much you trust your dealership to not screw you over. Sounds like you have experience with them, so you should know if they're always trying to recommend something 'extra' or not.

Not all dealerships are operated the same or by the same group (auto group) therefore their prices and upsells will vary. As mentioned above, try to understand what is being offered to you and determine yourself what is necessary or not.

Prepare to spend some $$$

- Scion dealer quoted me around $750 for 60K service
- Subaru dealer quoted me $485 for spark plugs alone...

RepairPal.com has CHEAP quotes for spark plug changes on BRZ, but it's way more for FR-S...

I wonder how many shops will actually honor RepairPal prices...

Most places don't even know what a BRZ is, that's why.. I would guess RepairPal doesn't either. Heck, even the service manager at my Subaru Dealership quoted me $170 (about the same as the RepairPal quote), until the mechanic informed him that's it's "not as easy as the other Subaru cars"... which is when they gave me the new quote of $485 too.

RepairPal probably figures the BRZ is "just the same" as other Subaru cars too. Don't expect the shops to honor their quote.

holy crap! really did not expect to be spending that much? is that about the average amount that everyone else had to spend for their 60k service?

Spark plugs are >$20 each, the service manual tells you to lift the engine to replace them, $100 parts, 3-4 hours of labor is $300-$400 on top of that is not an unreasonable quote. A quick mechanic who knows what they're doing might be able to get it done in under 3 hours, but then if you have 'em do other stuff I'd be surprised if you could get out the door for less than $500.

The price you pay for a 2,700 lb low c.g. boxer powered sports car is one mildly inconvenient service every 5 years.

When I bought the car they tried to use this fact to sell me on a several thousand dollar service plan. That would only cover one spark plug change.

My dealership charged me $40 per spark plug lol.

But like you said, it's a small price to pay IMO to enjoy driving this car. Compared with other mods I've done, it's really not that much. I've spent almost $500 on my oil pressure gauge alone & parts to install it.. You just have to budget a few thousand in advance for stuff like this. :D
