ft86speedfactory Exhaust Rattle
 
Just installed my ft86speedfactory exhaust. I used the bolts that came with the exhuast and the stock springs. It has a slight rattle when you first start up and give it gas. I have to be outside the car or have the windows down to hear it. When you touch the pipe it does move a bit where they connect.
Does it look like i installed it correctly?

The springs go behind the head of the bolt to keep pressure on the joint. You have put the springs between the flanges. This will do either nothing or push the flanges apart.

This. The springs are actually quite compressed once you start tightening. Looks like yours might be pushing the flanges apart.

I just found an old photo of the underside of my car and the springs are on the V1 side of the flange. In other words, everything is the correct orientation in your setup, except the springs should be on the outside of the V1 flange (closer to the rear of the car).

You have compressed the springs so far that they are acting as a solid piece. If you want the joint to be able to give with the motion of the engine and frame you should back the nut off a little bit.
(It will work as you have it.)

The springs were probably the cause of the rattle, but I'll toss out that a crack in the muffler can cause a rattle. I had this in a cheapo exhaust from another car. It was a hairline crack that made a wicked rattle/buzzing.

Just tossing that out even though you probably found the issue.

You have something weird going on there. It looks like you are still using the original gasket and/or the flange on the rear pipe isn't deep enough.

Those shoulder screws must be able to bottom without the spring being fully compressed. If they don't back out on their own, I see a fatigue failure in your future. :(

I'm going to change my tune. Not fatigue failure but the nut will back out because it isn't seated.

The problem is that the flange for that mid pipe is way thicker than stock AND it sets too far back. Luckily the long threaded portion of the shoulder screw makes up for it.

Given your situation, I'd stack enough washers between the shank and the front flange so the nut gets tight only with a few threads showing. That'll keep it from wobbling

An other possible fix is to drill for safety wire.

Sorry for reviving this old thread, but it seems to be the most relevant to my situation that I could find.

I recently installed a V1 exhaust I got used and I absolutely can't get the bolts on with the springs. I've read in a few places that you should reuse the stock spring bolts unless you have a 2017+, because they are too short, but my 2015 ones won't fit with the spring at all. In fact, I ran out of time and had to put them on without the springs two days ago. I really don't want to break anything, but I just can't see how I could fit the springs in there.
Is the exhaust supposed to come with bolts? The person I got it from was the second owner and said he didn't receive it with any bolts.

This is a speedfactory midpipe?? My flange does NOT get that close to the front pipe...

Hi, MileMonger. No apologies! That's why we do these.


Mine is an Ace midpipe. It fits exactly like stock. I suggest emailing the vendor. I hope they have a have a solution. Bolting it together loosely won't work. I'm guessing you already figured that out on your own. :(

Thanks for your reply Ultramaroon! The pipe actually feels pretty solid, it's the lack of flexibility from the springs that worries me now. I'm also not sure if the midpipe flange is supposed to be closer to the FP... Didn't feel like it could get any closer. I emailed FT86 yesterday, let's see if they answer me today.

EDIT: I did hear a sort of higher pitched ringing vibration at about 75 mph, but I'm not sure if it really was that or if it's just the exhaust at those rpms. Will check later today.
