Either way, I would think it depends on your home state's laws. |

Just pay the fine, If you get pulled over again for loud exhaust they could ticket you for failure to make repairs.

As others have said. Just pay it but you do run the risk of them throwing the book at you the next time. That said what were you doing that warranted getting pulled over and this ticket? At least around here unless your being an complete ass-hat the cops will leave you alone for exhaust.

I'm in NYC with a pretty loud exhaust, never been stopped for it. But judging by you saying 30mph, you were outside of the actual city... Quieter area I guess? |
I recently got a exhaust ticket (summons)2 days ago in Queens, NY. Unfortunately I have to make a court appearance in which I am going to just pay the fine. I was told by the officer if I get it repaired to show the receipt and they might reduce the fine. straight pipe ftl

when I got an exhaust ticket here in CT I put the stock exhaust on, got a decibel reading with that and brought it to court saying I fixed it, then they just got rid of the ticket.

It's a scam, and it's crap, and almost certainly a barely legitimate pretext to spend some time up close and personal and doing their "I smell something" face to look for more serious things. You COULD fight it, and ask the judge how they know it's louder and make the officer come with actual readings. I think this is a rebuttable presumption though, which means burden of proof is on you. In any event, in NYS, it's required to be a fix-it notice for that equip violation. either 24 or 48 hours from the next business day sundown to show up back at a station with the quiet exhaust on. The have no choice BUT to give you a statutory opportunity to fix it. For me it was about an hour and a half of wrenching. Got it "fixed" and signed off, and the loud exhaust was back on in a week. I have not been stopped again since. I would bet that if you decided to just take the fine, you'll be picking up a couple more fines on your way home that day. |
As someone who has a Type-80 thats loud AF, never got a ticket for it yet. But everyone I know who got a ticket for that just paid the fine and went on their way. I got a ticket for tint after having a car for 5 years and just paid it and never removed it. yolo?

When I got a ticket in CT they required a shop invoice showing proof it's been swapped. My exhaust was quiet too, but they didn't care, said anything aftermarket was no good. |

I got it done at a local exhaust shop here in New Britain, just brought in a decibel reading and signed by the shop and court said it was fine. Put my exhaust back in after the reading and haven't been bothered since. |
