Aaaand this is why I hate I-280.

Just changed lanes, car in front of me slows down, I slow down (completely in the lane already) and the car behind me lost control of his vehicle when he slammed the brakes and hit me. 😔

*sigh*

Sorry to hear that, sir or madam. I tend to dislike all the sj freeways equally. 880 more equally than most.

I hate 101 and 237 the most.
237 is where I got my very first accident ever. Got rear ended.
Every day I am so alert and playing dodge game with stupid drivers.

Do you have a dash cam? i think insurance perspective you might be liable because the damage looks like it occurred because you weren't in the lane fully. otherwise it would have been an impact from directly behind.

I am so glad my daily commute is on windy mountain roads.

I do, and it shows I was fully in the lane for several seconds before the impact.
The driver behind me lost control, swerved into the lane on our left, then back right into me, and then back across the other lane and into the guard rail.

EDIT: Additionally when I merged left, he wasn't even in the lane. He was two cars behind the car I merged in front of on the dash cam. I have no idea where he came from.

Sorry :/

I almost got in an accident last week on 280 in San Jose because someone in their SUV doesn't know how to check if they are next to other cars in traffic. She kept trying to change into my lane even with me honking and nowhere to go.

JeremyR 05-01-2017 01:02 PM

that really sucks man..on a brand new car too :( :(

strat61caster 05-01-2017 01:35 PM

There's only two places that scare me, 101 & Rengstorff has an on ramp that's like 30 feet long by the In N Out (fine with traffic and everyone is slow, sketchy when traffic is light and it's fast, going at 10/10ths in an 86 you have to merge before you hit 65 mph, good luck if someone is doing 75 down the right lane) and the 87/280 interchange is awful in every direction.

Patience is a virtue in Bay traffic, at least it's not LA where patience means you won't move for 15 minutes as everyone and their mother will cut you off.

Yep, this is where I had my issue last week. Driving around here is a PITA; people have no spatial awareness, whatsoever.

It's just not designed for the amount of traffic that goes through there, it was probably totally fine 40 years ago but I think it's been unchanged since it was built to service <500k people instead of >1 billion (SJ pop alone).

I'm ok with the lack of spatial awareness, I'll miss someone driving along my rear quarter panel every once in awhile too, defensive driving yo, you can only control one person. What bothers me the most is people with long as fuck on-ramps that think it's ok to merge at 45 mph when everyone else is doing 65+

Your car isn't that shitty, put your foot down goddamnit.

I feel the opposite about spatial awareness. I'm probably rare, but when my dad taught me to drive he always taught about "driving" the other cars nearby. No, not literally, but the idea was to keep in mind where other cars are relative to me and try to understand what they might do before they have a chance to do it. It's not easy to do nor is it perfect, but at least for me I think it's been very helpful.

Yeah, that's the worst too. Sometimes I'll be in the lane next to an on-ramp and deliberately let off the gas a bit (usually without people right behind me) so that people getting on have a chance to merge, but they wind up going 45mph or whatever and I either need to decide to slow down to that speed (pretty dangerous on a freeway) or speed up and just pass them before the lane merges.

It's a pain. Just get going! But I think I read somewhere it has to do with people having anxiety issues and/or not trusting that their car is fast enough. Kinda odd but I can't really complain since I don't have that issue myself and they certainly might.

Zoh showed me the cam footage. The guy clearly wasnt paying attention and paid for it. It really sucks especially cuz you just had the bumper repaired a month or so ago too. This area sucks for driving. And its not even just on the free way. Just the other day i found a small dent on my driver side door. Obv no note or anything. Just annoying.

mr_squirrel 05-01-2017 04:28 PM

I have a front cam. Makes me want to get a rear cam just in case.

Yup.
Just spoke to the estimator the other day. Two weeks to repair and $6k worth of damage. Whole left rear quarter panel needs to be replaced, as well as the wheel well panels, the tire, and some other body work. The alloy is being sent out to see if they can repair it, if not that has to be replaced too. Surprisingly, they're apparently able to fix the rear bumper (Though I'll probably have them repaint the whole thing, since the paint is already ready, etc.)

Sorry about your door, dude. That really sucks. :(

I'll post the dashcam footage once all the insurance stuff is sorted out.
