2017 BRZ and Perrin Oil Cooler Install

Perrin OC was just added for track events to my 2017 PP BRZ by my mechanic. While RSD listed it as compatible with my car, it only is "sort of." The new airbox has a square cover and takes up the space for the oil lines coming off the sandwich plate. He called to tell me my options were to leave the unit off the car & return it or find an older style air box and he'd zip tie my current one in place, which is what we did. Turned out finding a used airbox wasn't as easy as I assumed it would be and, with a track weekend approaching, I decided to take the matter into my own hands and hack the box. I bought a roll of DEI Floor and Tunnel Shield and the vendor threw in a roll of heat tape, which ended up coming in handy to cover the edges of the DEI product. $40 got it done.

I definitely would have waited to install the oil cooler instead of doing that...

Well, it's a $50 part & altering it gets me on track. Seems worth it to me

Just a heads up but that tape will start to come up from the edges at some point, it's really annoying to me. (assuming its DEI cool tape)

Just swap in a 13-16 intake like I did.

Thanks, I'll be keeping an eye on it

Right, that's still the plan. This just gives me time to find one that's in good condition and realistically priced.

If you can't source one out there, I can find a used one for you out here and ship it to you.

This may be less expensive than a new airbox.

Parts vendors will hate me for saying this, but I dont think a single track event without an oil cooler near KY in spring is going to do any damage to the engine.

Not likely to cause any damage, but I would hurry to get it installed too, if I had most of the parts on-hand. I did a track day without an oil cooler in December at Laguna Seca in 50°F weather and still hit 275°F+ oil temps.

When I was monitoring my oil temps at 50F weather (this February I think), I never saw anything above 250-255F. The temps will depend on a lot of things like the track layout, driver, session length etc. That's why I think people should get a $20 obd adapter and a $10 iphone app to monitor their temps before investing $600+ on an oil cooling system (or going thru the hassle OP went thru).

I also dont see the fuss about 275F oil temp while Corvette guys are in the 300F range, but that's a whole other topic...
