Converting 2017 BRZ fog lights to FRS turn signals?

I was never a huge fan of the FRS front bumper. I wanted a BRZ, but got a screaming deal on a 10 series a couple years ago. (Un)luckily this winter, I managed to crack my bumper on a bowling ball sized chunk of ice. So when it came time to replace it, I figured it was the perfect opportunity swap a 2017 BRZ bumper. Unfortunately, I didn't research as thoroughly as I should have. The BRZ headlights have turn signals built in, whereas the FRS has the turns in the bumper...

I could just get BRZ headlights, but I really like the 10 series HIDs... So I'm hoping I can modify the BRZ fog light housing to accept the FRS turn signal bulbs. This will be cheaper, and I'll be happier with the result. My only question is: Will the turn signal bulbs fit in the housing? I don't want to buy the housings if the bulbs won't even fit, but I don't know how else to find out... Anybody have the answer?

More pics coming soon, but here is one the shop sent me:

So it looks like the OEM fog light assemblies are a sealed LED unit so that would be some work. Unless you dont mind a white blinker, this may not be illegal in some states a will fail an inspection too.

FT86 speedfactory shows the install for the OEM fog light units on the their website so that will show you the mounting. If you do some research into the mounting and size, you can get a similar housing that uses a replaceable bulb and get a yellow bulb for that housing. Then splice that into the turn signal wiring.

Hm. Id rather not do any wire splicing, Im hoping to just use the factory bulb and connection. I will have to look around and see if I can find an empty bulb housing that will fit into the brz bumper fog holes. A dremel/cutter and some jb weld oughtta do the trick, its just a matter of finding a housing. Once I find them, Ill probably order two sets, so when the bulbs go, i wont have to re-engineer them.

If all else fails, Ill just replace the headlights, but I really like the stock ones. Plus, I like the idea of having a one-off custom setup.

The brz vertical stack led lights might be a better option to splice in to a turn.

Just look up the bulb number for your turn and the brz fog to see if it could be plug and play, unfortunately that would look dumb not being a fog of some kind as well (like an led switchback).

I asked my local shop if they can splice the factory brz fogs to the turn signal harness. If they can, Ill just do that and tint them amber.

Looking dumb is a matter of opinion lol. To me, its going to look the exact same as fog lights that are turned off, except when I use my blinker, in which case they will look like a factory turn signal to 99% of other drivers. The remaining 1% of car enthusiasts might notice, but in that case they've already noticed the bumper swap too. I don't really care what others think of my car, I just want turn signals so I dont cause wrecks at 4 way stops...

Amber tinted turn signal foglights will stick out like a sore thumb, even to non car enthusiasts. People know what a foglight is and what it does. A "better" option would be the vertical stacked leds. Probably cost wise similar as well.

Thats just like, your opinion, mannnn...

I really dont give a turd nugget about what anyone thinks, if I wanted a normal car Id have bought a camry or elantra like eveyone else. :slap:

I do like those vertical stacked LEDs though, might just do that! Thanks for the suggestion

I used the term "splice" loosely here. I just mean to get the electrical signal for the turn signal somehow. Whether that is cutting, T-tapping, or an adapter that is up to you.

The FRS uses a 7443 combination turn/parking bulb and the socket has 3 wires; one for ground, one for parking, and one for the turn signal. Where as most replaceable bulb fog setups will use an H11, 9005, 9006, plus a few more.

I would probably look for an adapter, 7443 on one side and a socket to fit what ever bulb/fog light on the other. This way it is really just plug and play as far as the electricals go.

If you check out the video for the OEM fogs on ft86speedfactory.com it will show you the mounting and it will give you and idea of what to look for in a fog light housing.

neat project btw, interested to see where this goes.

Something I forgot to mention on my previous post is dont use the a halogen fog light bulb straight off your blinker wiring.

The reason I say this is because halogen fog lights use the same bulb as a headlight so it draws the same amount of wattage/amperage and the blinker wiring was not designed for this amount of power draw. A solution for this would be to use a LED version of the fog light bulb.

I definitely agree with you Wolf. Best option for OP is to get the vertical stack leds and have them converted to turn signals.
