New manual driver - SPEED BUMPS!
 

These things are a nightmare for me right now lol. The car doesn't feel right to me in first gear or second gear going slowly over them. Does anyone have any advice on this?

I tend to coast over them and not accelerate, depending on the size I might blip the throttle to get the rear wheels over. Also this car will feel especially violent due to the nature of the stiff chassis and suspension.

Yes...I typically use first to go over speed bumps.

You'll get used to it. I had a hard time with reverse when I started driving a manual. I was just letting the clutch out with no gas as reverse felt incredibly touchy. Give it a few weeks though and it'll be second nature.

So you are downshifting to first while moving, albeit slowly, to go over them?

If you are slow enough, yup, that'd be the idea. I reckon it hasn't been long since you've been driving stick? Like another member put it, should become second nature in a while. Just take it easy.

Just remember not so shift into first until you are going very slow (2-3mph) any more is not good to do.

I just stick it in 2nd and play with the clutch and gas. Am I doing it wrong?

Well that's a good way to burn the clutch faster but I do it occasionally too. I only stick it in 1st if I'm going <5mph and/or about to floor it and try to go fast. If you crawl over speed bumps just use 1st. Some people like to coast over them in neutral and some people will just drive over them like they're in a truck. I've been so used to a slammed 370Z so I tend to coast or crawl over speed bumps at a very odd angle.

That's fine too.

With some practice using double-clutching you can downshift into 1st at speed. But 2nd is fine too. Just slow down, coast over the bump and then ease back into the power.

Coming from Lotuses where the entire front end is one piece that costs 8k+ to replace, I've developed a habit of taking every speed bump or driveway at absurdly large angles.

Yeah it's not worth it to be "reckless" when going over speedbumps. If you're low, go slow. I love the looks that people give, because sometimes you have to enter their lane or do something else crazy just to get over the bump at a decent angle.
