Crawford Power Blocks on 2017 aluminum intake?

I'm trying to pep my engine up a little bit without going too heavy on the mods

My plans are the OFH3 header/overpipe and OFT
Also just found out about the Crawford power blocks.

So has anyone tried installing these with the newly designed aluminum intake manifold?
Will they fit?
Do they work?

Don't. Just don't.

I suggest you call Crawford about the fitment.

Of course they work ...... I read that on the Internet ......

Reminds me of back-in-the-day I had this 1979 Chevrolet Caprice that I saved from the junkyard to use as my "airport car". Yep, I'd drive it 25 miles to the airport every Monday and drive it home at the end of the week (I was commuting to Chicago from Saint Louis each week, for about a year).

So, one fine day, I needed to change the thermostat (because it was stuck). I managed to twist off one of the bolts that went into the intake manifold. Then when I drilled it out, I broke off an easy-out in the hole.

(Oh, I hope @Ultramaroon doesn't read this ....:()

So, I took off the cast iron intake manifold and carried it into junk yard to get another one ..... they didn't have one. So, I went to a parts dealer and the nice man told me it would be cheaper for me to go down to his brother-in-laws speed shop and get a hi-performance, "high rise" aluminum intake manifold.

So, that's what I did ...... yep, sure enough ...... added 50 HP and cut 10 minutes off my airport commute time......... ...... of course it did .... it was a hi-rise manifold and I got it at a speed shop.......:w00t:

:slap:

Ha! Easy-Out. What a crock. They should be called False Hope.

Why not? I was reading some threads about people (Shiv) who dynoed and tuned with good results. I want to shift the power band down, which this seems to do

Same here, was about to install a set before I decided to go fi. I've seen evidence on here that they produce really nice gains in the mid upper rpm band.

The intake ports on the head were not changed so, in theory, the outlet ports on the intake manifold should be the same as the 13-16 model year. So they should fit with no problem. Also, RallySportdirect.com has them listed for the 2017 Toyota 86.

On the other hand they will need a custom tune and I would talk to Shiv or Delicious Tuning about that. I know Shiv has dealt with tuning the blocks quit a bit.

I found a thread where he has a DIY on how to take your existing tune and modify it for the power blocks. But I'm in correspondence with him now to get OFH3/OFT now and I asked him about the power blocks in general.

THANKS!

I put the blocks on my 17, I really like them. They fit just fine. Got a picture somewhere. I noticed much more of a difference with the blocks than I did with my tune you be honest

all they do is shift the powerband down on a stock tune. once you do literally anything else it kills power

What's the technical explanation for why it kills power with any mods?

Indeed shifts the power band down, and on a stock car you will lose a small bit above 7000 rpm. Tuning can restore that, so it's a win/win. Moto Mike has tested them on two nearly identical cars (headers, high octane fuel), and the blocks made a huge difference in the power curve. See:

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67520

Only place where they have no effect, or possibly a small negative effect, is forced induction. Positive manifold pressure more or less just renders any benefits of the blocks as useless.

Shiv also has a post where he extensively documents the benefits of these. Only place where he and Moto Mike differ is Mike was able to create the effects on E85, where Shiv stated he didn't have very positive results.

When you say tune, was it paired with header or just tune?

What rpms did you notice the most gains?

Vegasate6 12-17-2019 04:27 AM

Anybody paired these blocks on a 17’ with Invidia N1, catless header and OFT?
