I just bought a 2017 86 and am having a slight issue with it.

So basically, I just bought a brand new Toyota 86 recently and around a week after purchase, I realized that I never checked out the engine bay for myself..so naturally, I go to pop the hood and I realize the hood popper/release isn't working. So I take it in and it takes them roughly 3-4 hours to realize they can't get it open that day and they give the car back to drive around until the next time I can bring it in.

I brought it in this week and they got the hood open but apparently someone closed the hood super hard in the showroom and broke a piece off in the inside that keeps the hood release cable in place. I feel wronged buying a new car and basically having a part of it broken during delivery. Is it wrong for me to want compensation for this? Edit: I think the part that makes me mad is the dealership initially asked me if I was messing with the car, like I broke it myself and wanted to waste multiple days at the dealership getting it fixed. lol

Damn, that sucks.
My suggestion is to be firm, but very polite.
Demonstrate to the dealer that you aren't being unreasonable - they're far more likely to cooperate with you if they like you.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do to prove that you weren't responsible.
Don't expect compensation, but perhaps you'll be able to get them to fix it for you.

funwheeldrive 03-29-2017 05:54 PM

As long as they fix it free of charge I would be happy.

Tcoat 03-29-2017 05:57 PM

Did they fix it?
Did they charge you for it?
If the answers are yes and no then what more do you want? It sucks but things like that happen.
You signed for the car as acceptable as delivered and then had it a week before pointing out the problem so there is no way to prove you didn't do it (not saying you did).
Read through this forum and see how many guys mess their cars up and then take it is for warranty work and you will understand why the dealer asked the perfectly reasonable question.

HachiRokuX 03-29-2017 06:13 PM

They did say they'll fix the car for free, so that's cool and everything but it just pisses me off that I bought a car that costs nearly $30K and I have to go back and forth from the dealership (my next trip will be the fourth time for this specific issue) for the hood. I've wasted so many hours trying to get a brand new car fixed in the first few weeks of ownership when this should be the most stress free period of owning a car (in the vast majority of cases).

And even though they said they'll fix it they were just like, "we don't know when we'll get the part to fix your car in btw, *shrug* good luck with the car and don't open the hood in the meantime, we'll call you whenever it comes in."

That's a good point Tcoat, and a lesson learned for me, but I never expected a brand new car to be broken like this. Maybe I am asking too much to get some form of compensation like you guys implied, but I guess it would be nice if they offered me something... they obviously won't because they can always say "well, we think you broke the car the day after you took delivery and are trying to get free service out of us, just be lucky we're fixing the thing for you."

On the bright side, I know not to do business with this dealership in the future.

i would be mad too because of time wasted at dealership
but as long as they fix it, i would just walk away.
you should've checked every corners of car before leaving dealership at first place

Summerwolf 03-29-2017 06:26 PM

Yep, sucks but it will be covered. Honestly, I would be more upset with myself for not inspecting a vehicle before taking delivery.

Learn from your mistake and move on after the dealer fixes it. Compensation, lol.

HachiRokuX 03-29-2017 06:39 PM

I basically inspected every part of the car minus the hood release and gas tank release thing. And now that I think about it, it is pretty silly to expect compensation from people who make a living taking as much from you as possible with a smile on their faces.

Edit: And it is a business after all, but if I sold someone a messed up car, I'd feel guilty and treat them with respect, not just treat them like an afterthought. Still have no eta on when it'll be fixed and have no idea when my next free day to actually get it fixed will be

Every single person that sells, repairs, provides a service or performs any other form of work makes a living by taking as much as they can from you with a smile on their face. It is not restricted to car dealers.

they should be able to pull the fender liner to get access. doesn't seem complicated.

Here, I will make you feel better:

It could be worse. I got mine (albeit used, but with only 4K miles on it) and after two and a half weeks spun it in the rain and clipped the right front bumper on a guard rail. Wife commented that the paint was surely messed up, I calmly get out of the car and the front looks like it exploded: $9K damage, 8 weeks in shop, driving a damned Nissan Rogue loaner.

While I have always advocated for giving a new vehicle a quick 'break in scratch' to ward off true misfortune, when I finally got the car of my dreams I nearly totaled it at 10 mph and then was without for months.

Yup, this was all my doing, and after 26 years driving mostly motorcycles, I chalked it up to 'learning'. But at the end of the day, shit happens, and while this sucks and is not your fault, it is relatively minor compared to the joy this car will give you (and some of the true crap that happens out there).

Took me a while to get over my shame, but to this day I am meh about the accident. Its over and done, it sucked, but every time I get into my car and fire her up, I grin like its the first time.

Get off your computer, jump in the car and focus on the parts that make you smile. Hopefully it will be a long time before you have to go back to the dealer (and hopefully never have to drive a Nissan Rogue for weeks, that was the worst) and the rest of the time you just drive and grin, drive and grin.

PS: I do not advocate testing out what those buttons next to the gear shifter do in the first few weeks of ownership, at least not when there is a guard rail nearby!

Good luck and enjoy your car!

Either way, the warranty should cover it. They have to fix it for you.

Well, HachiRokuX, welcome to our forum .....

That's too bad you have a busted hood latch. That has to be a bit unsettling but, it's not life threating.

So, you can't get the hood open ...... heck, I'll go for weeks and not open the hood.

It appears that you are letting a minor busted part on your car wreck up your new car enjoyment.

Like said, I suggest you be patient, hope they fix it for no charge and don't expect any form of compensation for your aggravation.

As they say in the old country ..... shit happens ...... :sigh:

I'd want to be compensated (free oil change) only if they seriously botched the repair and were jerks about it.
