Turbo kit legality
I know people will say "look on google" but if you can link me to the website that says "forced induction" is illegal, I'd greatly appreciate that.
I knew someone who ran an SBD kit and said it wasn't. I know someone with a ek civic saying the same thing but I've heard from others that you will get your car impounded if you have a turbo kit. Can anyone confirm this ? Thanks for reading my post! Edit: especially for Ontario Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Turbo kit legality
Is this post real?
There are tonnes of production cars on the road with turbos from factory. A bolt on aftermarket turbo kit is not illegal, however some (almost all) aftermarket products are rated for "off road use only" and they should/will say so in their respective manuals. In which case, yes, they are "illegal" however I'd be hard pressed to think of any situation within my knowledge of someone having to prove that roadside to any form of law enforcement. Now, how you use said turbo is different. But I think someone is pulling your leg about FI being "illegal". Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I heard manufacturers turbo kits are legal but aftermarket turbo kits use either illegal piping or something that isn't legal. I'm Guna message SPeed by design and ask if they're legal on Canadian roads and post the answer here.

You are not allowed to remove or modify emissions equipment. Avoid that and you should be in business.

Anything is legal as long as you can pass safety, emissions and properly insure it (tell them if a car is heavily modded).
Thats it. Only nitrous is illegal so much as you can not be capable of turning on the tanks from the drivers seat to my knowledge. |

Emissions equipment ? Such as? Wouldn't an exhaust count as an emissions equipment? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

"Emission Control Systems or Devices 6.1 The following types of systems and devices are prescribed for the purpose of subsection 22 (4) of the Act: 1. A system or device that is manufactured by the manufacturer of the system or device that is being replaced and, i. is identical to or equivalent to the system or device that is being replaced, or ii. is manufactured as a replacement for the system or device that is being replaced." Essentially this means that unless declared and classified as a "hot rod" (engine conversion mostly) in theory your emission equipment must work as well as factory. Specifically catalytic converters and possibly EGR valves and Air Pumps if applicable. Mufflers and resonators do nothing for emissions, only noise Currently you can pass a vehicle with zero emission equipment at all as long as your car is coded with dummy signals from emission equipment and they don't perform a visual inspection |
If you want to be actually legal, you'll need a turbo kit that runs the stock exhaust manifold since removing the primary cat falls under the "removing emissions equipment" clause above.
If you want an easier search, look for kits that are CARB legal. You don't need the CARB tune up here, but if the hardware is good for California you'll be fine here. |
Works turbo kit is the only one that is carb legal.
The problem is with all that heat, canned tune that is probably rich, and the stock catalytic converter, the cats will eventually crumble and send metal shards towards your turbo impeller. But it is legal. Go for a jackson racing or edelbrock supercharger. |
Thank you all for clarifying! What about superchargers? Those don't modify the "emissions" devices or at least I think they don't.

A supercharger would definitely be less invasive. Problem with turbos is the whole exhaust situation. A supercharger really only affects the intake side of the deal, and if you get a centrifugal type, even that isn't significant.
