It's been studied extensively, Gen Y isn't buying cars because of cell phones and computers, it's economic forces. If we could all afford houses in the suburbs with white picket fences like the Baby Boomers could we'd be buying cars like crazy for our commutes just like the 60s-80s.

Instead we struggle to save on top of paying ever rising rents and decreasing buying power, buy the used 10 year old Camry for <$10k and hope it lasts you for 5+ years without major maintenance and by the third job in that time you might be able to afford a new car.

So this is the automotive version of Steve Martin's "how I turned a million in real estate into 50 dollars in cash".

Imo the 86 is so far out of toyotas normal target market its amazing they built it. Its raw yet refined and easily modified. Imo any higher tier performance car from Toyota will be a sterile, over engineered video game on wheels. Id rather they concentrate on these asinine special editions than make the 86 safe for all ages.

No cup holder is raw, having seats is refined.

I can feel the car working, enjoy the sensation without the expense and tertiary bullshit of other "drivers cars"

The 86 is an affordable way to enjoy the driver car experience. There are times when the thing just feels so damn right that I don't want the ride to end. As far as the special edition experiments go, id rather buy the standard model and modify it to my satisfaction.

Toyota imo should offer an upscaled 86 with wheels, brakes and forced induction just to placate the peanut gallery. Price should include a 4k premium to cover warranted engine replacement. They would probably sell more base 86s as well once prospective buyers realized that the giggles came with a higher cost of ownership.
