My BRZ Autocrossing at Big Northwest Subaru

This is my 2nd time autocrossing ever, and 2nd time with the BRZ :) See the connection? BRZ brought me to the world of AutoX :)

The venue was Pacific Raceways in Auburn, in their parking lot with very horrendous asphalt (bumpy, different pavements, lots of crap on the lot)

The AutoX was split up into N/A motors, and Turbo. All the Subaru cars were WRX and STI except for my lone BRZ. There were probably 20 or so entries.

We each had 5 runs, I did okay with 35s, 46s , 36s ,47s , 33.3s lap times (I can only distinctly remember the 5th lap time, but all the rest are accurate minus the fractions of the seconds)

Fastest lap I saw was around 30 seconds, with most of the cars going from 32 - 34 seconds.

All the STIs and WRXs were damn loud and had a hard time going around the technical corners. Which meant a good number of them were crowd pleasers with the loud exhausts and tire screeching. My runs however were "prius" quiet as some people in the crowd muttered. Many people thought I went slow when I had a clean and fast run. They also thought I went fast when I had a tire screeching run (this was the 46 and 47 second runs where I was going balls off the wall and missed my gate)

The BRZ does however take the looks department and the crowd "oohh-ahhh" whenever I crawl up to the start box. However they do become disappointed because of the lack of drama around the corners I talked about earlier.

Performance wise the BRZ did really well with handling corners. My wheels were firmly planted on the ground and never felt that I was fighting the car. The steering told me exactly what was happening with the tires, and I was able to react accordingly. The biggest thing I need to upgrade would be my tires, because I was at their limit before the BRZ's suspension and drivetrain was at it's limit.

Here is the video of my fastest run:

Slow looking runs are faster. AutoX is about smoothness. Just put a louder exhaust on it to please the crowd and continue to do your thing.

Yes in car video does more justice , all I could see was a little silver car going around at the end there , so hard to say if you were going smooth or too slow.
Not hating just hard to judge.

20 cars and only 5 runs? what's up with that? we had almost 50 at our last autoX and got 9 runs!

I have another autox coming in July 28. I'll get some in car shots! :) this isn't your typical autox as it is attached to a subaru event so we didn't have as much time

Looks fun, I am looking forward to doing this myself!

Here are some photos of the BRZ that people took during the event. Of course the photos they post up are when I killed the cones :)

Also what is the best place to put the Go Pro?

Any details on the car? What tires were you on? Is your car an auto or a manual?

mechaghost 07-16-2012 03:10 PM

I am on the OEM tires, with motegi mr125 wheels 17x7.5. I'm on auto, trac off

xwd 07-16-2012 03:45 PM

Ah yeah, autocross with no traction control on stock tires is definitely going to limit some things. :)

You really killed that cone!

I love how he beat quite a lot of WRXs and STIs times. Pretty much all of them had more aggressive aftermarket tires and tons tons tons more horsepower.

Congrats!! Way to go !!
