Sleepy Piston's road & track 86 (Swedish time attack)
Hi everyone! I've been reading this forum like a bible over the last year and I'm thinking it's time to share a bit of myself. Hopefully someone will one day learn something from this thread, as I have learnt from others!
http://i.imgur.com/JlDE647.jpg Here goes: My name is Joel, I'm 27 and been doing quite alot of track days for the last 5 years. Learned to drive in an Alfa Romeo and an Alfa was the first car I brought to a track. Been running some e36s and a 1-series too. My 86 is a more track oriented build though, and my vision is to have sort of a hybrid car that can be competative on the track yet street legal (which means no turbo in Sweden, sadly). I got the car in the end of 2015 and competed in the Swedish time attack series club-class in 2016 with just minor mods. This was the most fun I've ever had and I'm signed up for this year aswell. This series is actually filmed and on TV in 8 episodes (also streamable in all nordic countries). In case you're interested: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX9leKAS4wI"]The Best of Timeattacknu 2016 | O'snap - YouTube[/ame] http://i.imgur.com/WiseEZO.jpg A quick summary of last year's season: Mods (just performance wise): - BC racing BR coilovers 8/8kg springs - Tomei EL header and front pipe - ISR titanium axleback - Mishimoto CAI - Mishimoto oil cooler w. thermostat - Crawford performance intake billets - Ecutek tune - Yellowstuff pads - Sparco EVO/Rev seats Tires: - Kumho ku36 18" 225 - Yokohama AD08R 18" 235 It was the general consensus at the end of the season that you needed ad08r to be competative. We are limited to TW180 and some tiers (like Michelin cups and federal 595 rs-r are also forbidden) I finished a total fifth in the series and took 2 3rd places in two seperate events! http://i.imgur.com/fjra18t.jpg Moving on, a few weeks after the final race, just before winter I got the horrifying DI seal issue. It sounded like an AK47 going off under the hood but the car never threw a code. The car was still under warranty and toyota decided to fix it, however they could not take my word for what the problem was. A few week later I went over to pick up the car. Didn't even get out of their parking lot before I heard it again. They had changed the fuel pump as that was the only TSB they ahd found in concern to mysterious noises. They agreed to follow my recommendation after this (which would have been non existant if it were'nt for this forum!) and they replaced the seals and also removed the intake billets upon my request. After running about 400km and shifting down, it came back again and man was I pissed. Put the car in the garage and stripped it apart and pulled out the injectors my self. http://i.imgur.com/YLsD6kF.jpg It was quite apparant that the toyota tech had'nt done his job properly. I ordered the special tool and some seals myself and also convinced toyota to send me 3 brand new injectors under warranty as the tech had clearly scratched the seal surface while removing the old seals. Yhey had'nt even used the special tool for new seals either! I settled down when they agreed to send me the three new injectors though. They are 500$ a piece otherwise... While waiting for the new injectors I took the decision to go all in for this years season and order some more nice bits to bring the car from a standard cool looking car, to something a bit more performance oriented. - Delicious tuning flexi fuel kit with sensor and race tune. Not only will this give me another 20hp or so it'll also help the DI seal issue by bringing down maximum combustion temperature. http://i.imgur.com/jNr3lcr.jpg http://i.imgur.com/7bhArqm.jpg - Öhlins R&T coilovers w. Velox adjustable top mounts. Yes, the new kit with the ridiciously low spring rates (4/3kg). However, I live close to Öhlins and these were developed on one of our local tracks. They have brilliant support and have allready ordered different springs for me to test out!! I will keep you posted about these as I've not seen anyone running them! http://i.imgur.com/hM8pEdx.jpg http://i.imgur.com/9MX84a1.jpg - Whiteline insert bushings: Differential, rear subframe and gearbox (together with the energy supsension shifter mount). The whine in 1st and 2nd gear is crazy now. Sounds like I've got straight cut gears:D Also there is a slight "clonk" while pressing the clutch now. I'm hoping it's got something to do with the stiffer drive line aswell as it would be strange if the throw out bearing cracked during the winter in the garage... - Brakes... I know EBC is cheap and thats why I used them. I ate through one set of front pads last year per race. They were only 70$ though:D But after testing some pre owned p-Mu the difference was quite apparent. Many were running PFC11's and they seem to be working very well with our tires. I'll probably run something equivalent to them. I ordered the porsche cooling ducts aswell as I want to keep the fog lights. http://i.imgur.com/Hk9pG7D.jpg I also got very lucky and found a AP racing bbk, slightly used from the UK. All the numbers on the callipers and so on matches up with this kit: https://www.essexparts.com/ap-racing...fourpiston-332 It might have been the deal of my life:D We will see in next week when I get them:) This starts to feel like an essay. Here are some more pictures and I'll get back to you soon with more updates! http://i.imgur.com/vDuvfzV.jpg http://i.imgur.com/NBt0d9z.jpg http://i.imgur.com/IJJ5C94.jpg http://i.imgur.com/DEyBYq0.jpg http://i.imgur.com/JlDE647.jpg |
Cool to see another track-focused build from Europe.
A friend of mine has the same Öhlins R&T kit, i liked it a lot on track but he still has to do some more adjustment(he's getting Raceseng top mounts and SPL lca's mounted next month). I look forward to your impressions when you get those new springs from Öhlins, i know he will appreciate the info ;) |
Nice to hear! Compared to the BCs I previously ran, the damper settings are really soft. Running them on the hardest on a stone laid road is more comfortable than the oem suspension on perfect asphalt^^ Öhlins are saying that they are working with the chassis and not just making everything stiffer.
Yesterday I ordered the trackspec louvers and the SARD LSR wing:) Cant wait to get them now!:) |
I was ready to tell you that the BC is not the best decision, but then I saw that you changed to Öhlins. :) I had a discussion last year to install the same kit. In Germany this can be done only in the Öhlins center they have in Nürburgring. I haven't done it yet, because there is minimal information about this kit. Keep us posted.
|
hehe the BCs are actually allright if you wanna have a stiffer, cooler looking car. I think they are far superior to D2, K-sport and all the other cheaper Taiwan brands. It will be great to feel the difference with the real deal though!:) I should be able to cut seconds with them actually:)
I installed mine myself. A bit more work to it than regular coilovers but its an easy job in the end=) |

I thought only the part had to be TUV approved. Guess I was wrong!
Yesterday my buddy took the car from the garage and drove 250km to me. My DI seals have now lasted longer than when Toyota changed them😂 On the way he picked up a beautiful package from an English gentleman. Have a look at these😍😍😍 https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c6e488ee3d.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...29f6440870.jpg Things to do next week: - mount the new brakes - retighten all bolts for the front coilovers as something is clonking - corner weight and wheel adjustment is booked for Friday! Have a good weekend😎 Skickat från min iPhone med Tapatalk |

Sooo... The car has now been driven 600km and the DI seals are still holding! That makes me at least 50% better than the Toyota tech who changed them the last time😂
Anyhow the new brakes are on! I'll give some feedback on them tomorrow when I've tested them! All bolts have been tightened and the clunk-noise while pressing the clutch has been deemed normal. I met a guy today who have the same whiteline bushing and his car has the same noise! Also, I went with a buddy 800km and picked up a spare engine! It's been deemed out because of silver flakes in the oil, but I sort of only paid for the coils:) Atleast now I got a lot of spares and if my engine doesn't brake this year, I'll start building this one next winter:) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0e1f6b455c.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...977a212d85.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2a15317532.jpg |

You said you have to stay NA correct? |
I have seen a few 2,3L stroker kits around:) That would be awesome as hell!
Well, to keep it road legal in Sweden yes. However lots of people dismount turbos before doing the annual MOT. Quite a lot of work though. With a supercharger you just need to remove the belt so that it is not in use:) Also, for next year I will probably go up a class in the time attack series where FI would be allowed. Anyone for a 2,3L supercharged FA20?🙄 Skickat från min iPhone med Tapatalk |
You mentioned PFC 11's being used in other cars. Are those BRZ's?
Is this recent? I have been trying to get rears for my car but PFC says they are not making them anymore. 1124.11.16.44 |
Yeah mostly other cars but a GT86 ran them last year but he seem to have issues with them this year so your info is probably correct. I'm going winmax W6.5 this year.
Damn it looks nice now. I put on last years AD08R's and they have at least another track day in them. Car feels a lot stiffer too! Can't wait to get my SARD wing and TRD spoiler next week and put on the trackspec louvers!
are you running Yellowstuf front and rear? how do you like them?
|
Quote:
I was yes. They are crap compared to other ones. They have very inconsistent feel and they wear down very fast. I used a new set per 1.5 track day or so. Compared to project mu ns400 that I tried at the end of the season the yellow stuff are crap. Also they will not be yellow for long as the paint on them burns up pretty quickly making them look like crap. I would not recommend them, but I have several friends who uses them on their bmws and they seem pretty happy with them. |
thanks for the feed back man, Im looking to upgrade my pad very soon, do you daily your 86? which pad would you recommend to tackle both track and street use?
|
Hi, just reading through your thread.. great stuff!!
I have the Ohlins MI20 kit, with the 6kg/6kg springs and top mounts. Would you mind asking Ohlins why they changed their set up for this platform please? 4kg/3kg seems silly soft? |

Daily and daily, I run it quite a lot actually but I got another car too that I use whenever I can. I put 1000km on the 86 the last few weeks though and did more than 10k last year. I haven't got that much experience with different pads to be honest. I ended the season with a set of Project mu HC800+ front and NS400 rear. Bought them from a guy at the track when I didn't have any spare yellow stuffs. They feel 20 times better! Actually, in comparison the yellow stuffs seem slippery in and the price difference is not that big! I noticed ft86 doesn't sell the HC800+ anymore and the NS400 might crumble quick in the front! I would however consider them as they are reasonably priced. In my new AP calipers I got some ferodo ds2500 pads. Hard to say what they feel like since the caliper itself gives it a different feeling too. They are however a pretty popular all round street/track quality pad! I'd definitely give them a shot! http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/fero...l#.WMwclt187YU And never try Red stuff! I've had the entire pad surface fall off after a few laps in a BMW 1-Series. |

Welcome😎 The 6/6 were developed on nurnburg ring I hear. The 4/3 on a Swedish track called Gelleråsen. I'm gonna ask them again to clarify it more next time I talk to them! |
Today was corner weight day!
The car seems very well balanced and I've decided to stick with Ohlins standard height. It looks nice on my 18's! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b793c6966c.jpg It weighs 1230kgs without me in it. Pretty decent considering I haven't done any lightening other than sparco seats and a titanium muffler and some other minor mods! The balance is awesome with only a few kg difference between the sides! Of course, with me in it, it gets a bit more unbalanced but it's certainly within the limits of what is considered good! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...52d3700cee.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...56eeec2647.jpg Also I went with the following alignment: Front: Toe out 0.05 Camber 3,4 Rear: Toe in 0,05 Camber 1,7 (not adjustable and I'm not allowed to change LCA's) Since I put last seasons ad08r's on the car is immensely stiffer and the Ohlins spring rates doesn't feel that far off anymore. This was a bit of a revelation for a rookie like myself, to actually get a feel of what a soft sidewall feels like:) And AP + Ohlins = porn🙄 https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...675296dc96.jpg |
Today we put the saw to the hood I'm impressed of how light the oem hood is. There is no point at all going carbon fibre, especially when there is something as pretty and performance enhancing as the trackspec louvers!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...414ecf5afa.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fcdf877733.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a0e576b030.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a80c756a67.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...84f04f4234.jpg I for once took a lot of pictures during the install so if anyone would like a DIY I'll do it!:) Now begins the long wait for more parts... |
Nice build.
Subbed |
Since I've got the car about 200km away from where I live and I send all parts to my mate's, he sometimes sends me porn pictures😍
Behold! TRD carbon fibre spoiler and SARD LSR carbon fibre wing with the extended brackets😍 https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e9b3847a39.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5a1a5a406d.jpg I can't wait to install these! The car is getting closer to what I want it to be, both visually stunning and great performing! |
damn this thing is getting better and better!.
I have a TRD wing as well, very tempting to order the SARD wing with the extension bracket off a vendor on the forum. |
Cheers to that! I ordered it on eBay but I was in contact with the seller before and he was well aware of the extension brackets and had them manufactured for me! It could be the same guy!:)
Got quite a lot of work the next few days and I might have to spend the weekend in turkey:/ Just can't wait to put these on!!! |
The SARD LSR is on! It does look fucking sweet!!!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...206fbc8a80.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2fa7d54ab6.jpg Can't wait to try it out now! Just waiting for my winmax W6.5 pads (they're like 4 weeks away). I ordered an extra set of ferodo ds2500 for the front and have an old pair of yellowstuff rears that I'll use as backup and I just might try to hit the track with them next weekend... I can't resist anymore!:D |
awesome build bro, im gonna look into project mu brakes
|
Today I started to dissect the spare engine I bought, to inspect the bearings... and oh boy!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d6d945c3b5.jpg Cyl 1: Wtf have happened to the rod! It's like the cast steel has disintegrated! Bearing had scratches but the crank was fine. Cyl 2 and 3 are the same with destroyed rods and no damage to the crank. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...58ff919c68.jpg Cyl 4.... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4ded7acea2.jpg The bearings were seized on the crank and was totally grinder down on the edges. The crank is badly damaged here. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...75821672f6.jpg This also looked odd. The entire block seems to be offset a tiny bit. Is this normal with boxers? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e5499ce3e1.jpg Also have a look on the surface above the main bearings. It almost looks as if the crank has scratched the block itself. However, there is sealant still on the groove as you can see here: https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3fdebe8560.jpg At least it have compression and I only paid 350 for it😜 Any engine builders out there that care to assist a bit? I'm considering a track day next Sunday to make sure everything runs fine on the car. I've ordered a set of ferodo ds2500 pad for the front that I'll use before my real pads get here. Can't wait, the car feels crazy good now! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...50b67bcdc2.jpg |
the wing combo looks so good man. I just got my Sard Wing on yesterday and waiting for my extended brackets to come in a couple of day
|
This weekend it's time for Elmia (Scandinavia's SEMA show)! The 86 have received the honour of representing the club class for Timeattacknu.se and will be on display on their stand during the entire show!
This is so cool and a bit like a dream come true! Hopefully you'll get some beautiful pictures during easter! Tomorrow the polishing machine will be on fire on its quest to remove old battle scars:) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...11964134e4.jpg |
I've had some really nice chats with people at the expo today! Öhlins continue to blow me away with their knowledge and I've got some nice sponsors on wheels and Motul oil! It feels very good!:)
Tomorrow I'm going to Italy for a small vacation, but the car will be at the expo for another 3 days. Hopefully I'll get some more nice photos soon!:) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1619da0e62.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...53afab3150.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...67434b942b.jpg |
Today, me and my sleepy piston racing team mate drove 250km north for tomorrow's media/test day organized by the time attack crew. We drove through snow, hail, rain and sunshine... once there we started to make camp. We live in apartments and have normal jobs - no room or economy for trailers and such hence yesteryear it became sort of our image that we always used a camping tent. This year we have sort of upgraded it. We now have a portable kitchen, a fridge and heating fans. All of this fits into our cars aswell! We're sort of doing this Bear Grylls style but we sort of don't have any other option. This is our camp today in +2C and rain/hail/snow:D

Thanks for contributing your experiences. Does tuborg eliminate the torque dip?

Of course! Been waiting for a few more good pictures!:) As you know, I've had the first test day for the season and before we continue I'd like to point out the conditions. It took place on Gelleråsen, Karlskoga raceway which is also Öhlins test track in Sweden. First of all, since I got a punctured tire on one of my Ad08Rs I've put two old Kumho KU36 225s in the front. My ad08rs are 235s meaning I ran on a staggered setup with different tires front/rear (and old ones too). Also, since I haven't got my brake pads yet I was running on my old project mu ns400 in the rear and a set of new Ferodo DS2500 front that were supposed to act as my emergency spare pads this season. The final corner of the circuit has also been remade which makes it impossible to compare times from last year to present. Instead of being a big U-type corner, the last part of the "U" cuts of fast in the end. It's hard to describe but I'll try to post some comparative pictures when I get to a computer. The overall talk in the Carerra gt3 series is that the track is faster this year. If that also concerns less powerful cars, this season will tell! So, we started of in near freezing temperatures and the track was wet. I was running about 9 seconds slower than last year and thought to my self: what the fuck! Atleast my new Ohlins would set me close to last year's times despite being in the wet. But after a few tries adjusting the damper settings I was down to low 1.20s and eventually when the track dried up I put up some 1,18.9xx times which is slightly faster than what we ran last year. If this is because of the temperature, the new chassis or what so ever, I just don't know, but I have great hopes of going sub 1.17 for the competitive season that we have ahead of us. The only major difference I felt so far is the brakes. It's sort of an epiphany. With the street pads, I can brake from about 180km/h to about 60 were i turn into the first corner, in less than 80 metres! For the first part of a second, when you get on the brakes, it feels like it's breaking hard. Then, after that brief period of time (I assume when my street pads have reached a more beneficial temperature) the car breaks so hard it's crazy! Because of the solid calipers I'm well aware the feeling would be different but this is something out of that league! Also, as AP have said the brake bias have not been changed, this made it possible to trail brake nicely. Perhaps I won't need this when I get proper tires on, but with the screaming ku36s infront it was definatley necessary. Next race will be a standalone competition in southern Sweden were I'm allowed to run R-compound tires. Right now I'm contemplating getting a cheap set of federal 595rsr for the oem 17" wheels or going all in and getting a set of RPF1s or similar together with Kumho V70A R-tires.... any suggestions that would ease my conciousness in regards of spending 2000$ instead of 400, is much appreciated! The only pic I've got so far from this year in racing conditions: https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...83fa323875.jpg |
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a831ee96d0.jpg
This is a picture of Gelleråsen, Karlskoga raceway. The red line indicates the new shape of the curve. As you can see, it cuts of suddenly in the second half of the final curve. This used to be quite a tricky turn even before, and now it is even more so. It's a great track though, and very fun as a spectator aswell since you can see the entire track from the stands! |
Nice update. Thanks.
|
Next weekend I'm booked for a stand-alone competition in the time attack series. It's a separate event with more basic rules that anyone can show up for. It's on a track in southern Sweden and this separate event is called "king of the south" (time attack here does several of these stand alone events called "king of"). Last year, this was my first ever competition and I actually finished third!
The very basic regulations here are: less than 200hp you can run on R-compound tires. More than that and your limited to "street tires" where the only competitive one is sort of the Yokohama AD08R which is also the limit for me in the series. Since the 86 have 200hp on the paper I've actually found a pair of Toyo 888r and a new set of wheels to mount them on and this would be probably be quite competitive! However, as always in racing I might not get them in time... I'm well aware the triple 8s are not the best tires I can get but they were the ones that could be here the fastest. I still have some hope to get them in time but I'm quite worried. My AD08Rs are taking time aswell and I might not even get those!!! If that's the case I'll have to run the same setup as the previous test day. I'm well aware it's not going to be competitive but at least I'll get some time in the drivers seat:) If your not already following Sleepypistonracing or Timeattacknu.se on Facebook, please do! We both do our updates in English and you'll get a peek on my team mate and best friend's budget E36 325i racer aswell! And this time attack series is the biggest in the world! (More than 100 cars!) Oh, I'm waiting for my Winmax pads aswell. I've heard they've hade some crazy delivery times during the last year and it's getting seriously annoying... My street pads works quite fine but they wear fast as hell... But as they say, "hope is the last thing to abandon man"... I might still get both tires and pads in time... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1499d9f3d5.jpg |
I am checking today the Timeattacknu.se race. I think Joel is running in the club series category. Program is here:
https://www.facebook.com/Timeattackn...type=3&theater and live results here: http://liveresults.mylaps.com/slc/ Good luck! |
Sweet! That is correct! Having a hard time getting the chassi settings right. Last attempt I just tried to put the settings to the hardest and it gave me the quickest times so far. I'm placed second at the moment but there is one more qualifying session before the finals!
