Dipstick leak vs Timing Chain Cover
So I picked up my new to me 13 BRZ limited today with 59k on the clock. I didn't notice the burn oil smell after i test drove it, and I somehow missed the leak visually inspecting it. I've searched some and continuing to do so, but I'm in slight panic mode currently. Anyone have any advice on whether or not this is the timing chain cover leaking or the dipstick? I don't have a warranty, and bought from a private seller, clean carfax and the car has otherwise been well maintained. I haven't found much in the way of a DIY resealing the timing chain cover, am I missing a huge thread on this?

Your pictures don't show up for me. I would suggest that you clean up the area that is seeping oil and observe where it starts to reappear. As far as a DIY removal and reseal of the timing chain cover, I figure that would be a really BIG DIY job you may wish not to take on. I hope you get it sorted out. humfrz |
So yesterday I saw build up on the front of the timing cover and assumed that's where the leak and smell were coming from. Turns out my rear cam plate was leaking and definitely causing some smells. I cleaned everything up and will continue to monitor everything to see if there are any other leaks, but in the mean time I have a Raceseng cam plate on it's way to me!
Thanks again for the help. I'm in love with this car. I feel like you can almost judge a car based off the forums dedicated to them, and with that said, the 86 seems to be a big winner. |
I know you originally messaged me about my wheels for sale, but I l've actually gone through about 30,000 of oil leaks on my BRZ during ownership thus far, I can't see your pictures and I know you found some oil near the rear cover, but if it comes up again send me some pictures. I had the "timing cover" problem and it turned out being my half blocks splitting apart from the front-center->back... So I know those signs now too lol. The fix was a new short block... So i hope for your sake that it's a cam-plate, those are easy!
