New BRZ Sounds

I have just got a new 2017 BRZ and was very surprised by the terrible exhaust note and very noisy cabin. The exhaust sounded very raspy and tinnie, and when accelerating there was a terrible rattly sound. I had read many reviews and none of them mentioned this so I was quite disappointed.

Fortunately after 700-800km the exhaust note improved markedly. I guess it just had to be 'burnt in'. All of the raspiness has gone and it has a nice roar now, but the rattly acceleration persisted.

I suspected the rattliness might be coming from the 'noise generator' so I plugged it with a simple foam ear plug and... WOW! What a difference.

Now the cabin is so much quieter and the exhaust has a nice roar when you accelerate, and sounds like what I expected a new sports car to sound like.

That 'noise generator' is ridiculous! It doesn't sound anything like a motor - just some rattling diaphragm. Why bother?

The 12V outlet cover in the glove box fits perfectly into the sound generator outlet under the carpet on the passenger side by design.

IIRC the Mahle sound generator has been around since 2003/4 with the MkV Golf GTI so it's nothing new, even the NC Miata has one. It sounds like a flushing toilet to me when I can hear it.

I don't have my sound generator plugged in since I have an STI Sport Muffler and can't hear it anyway. When I had it plugged in for a week a few months ago just for kicks I can hear a slight rattle from under the hood at full acceleration, so I put it back onto the 12V outlet instead.

I call it the kazoo!

BMW uses the radio to make a fake noise, Jags have a special box under the dash, low level Mustangs have a diaphragm that vibrates on the intake and Toyota/Subaru said

Maybe if they were downloadable mp3 you could pick... Ferrari Testarossa, Porsche 911 GT3, BMW M3, etc, etc.
Might be worthwhile.

All i hear in my 2017 is a buzzing/whirring passenger side interior fan... bringing it in to service once i get back from my little road trip this weekend.

Already included from the factory at least with a Renault.

Yeah, take the noise generator out. It will make a huge difference. It gets rid of the boomy type engine noise. Just did this a couple days ago on mine as well. Now to add an exhaust

sodjer 02-23-2017 03:35 PM

Could also just grab one of these :)
