2017 NorCal 86CUP - Presented by GT Radial
We've been posting in the 2016 thread, but it's time to split from that and create a new one. So what is 86CUP?
86CUP is the premier, independently organized, FRS/BRZ Time Trial series in North America. Utilizing a ruleset that is specific to the platforms, the 86CUP aims to provide a friendly, safe, environment in which 86 enthusiasts can hone their driving skills. Come join us at our events, get a ride, and experience the true capabilities of our platform in its natural environment! For 2017, we'd like to welcome GT Radial as the title sponsor for the NorCal 86CUP! GT Radial has been a sponsor for us since the beginning, but this year, they're upping the ante and generously giving away cash prizes for the podium winners of the Stock and Street classes in addition to the tire Contingency program. See below for details! Returning this year to continue supporting our series are Winmax, CounterSpace Garage, Elite Performance, and 86drive. Each have been instrumental in the past to help build the NorCal 86CUP series to what it is today, and we look forward to working with these sponsors again this year! We have a website with all the details about the series here (http://www.norcal86cup.com/), but I'll summarize some of the highlights in this post. And here we are right after the first event!
What a wet start to the season of the 2017 NorCal 86CUP, presented by GT Radial! Thanks to everyone who came out to join us, and of course, thanks to all our sponsors for making this happen. I saw many familiar faces and some new ones too! We also had a good start to the GT Radial Championship Prize program with 6 drivers overall in the GT Radial Street Class! Looks like we're going to see some healthy competition in this class this year! Please see below for the results of this event, and visit the website for complete details: http://www.norcal86cup.com/ I already see some pictures and videos from Saturday popping up. If anyone else has pics/videos they'd like to share, post them up! Also, as a reminder, if you'd like to participate in the GT Radial Championship Prize program, you need to register with GT Radial directly by March 1! Please visit this page for instructions on how to register: https://www.86cup.us/gtradial/ I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the March 4-5 event at Thunderhill! The event is almost full, so register NOW. Open group still has spots, and Point-by has available spots on Sunday: http://www.ncracing.org/events.php #gtradial #winmax #counterspacegarage #eliteperformance #86drive #scottgrassophotography #86Cup #NCRC |

Tempted to run in the stock class. Anyone know what the cost is? I.e. tires, entry fees, etc.? I know this is a real newb question but I'm newb to this.

Come out and join us! Its a ton of fun! As for costs... What is your experience level (how many track events if any)? The more experience you have the faster you will be and the more expensive it will be due to going through tires and brake pads faster. Tires: If you do the GT Radial Tire Contingency Program (ie install GT Radial SX2 or HPY on your rims and place the GT Radial fender or windshield sticker on your car) you can claim a free tire for every 10 pts you earn in your class. You can win a maximum of 10 pts per event. There are 13 events in 2017. Otherwise a set of tires will cost you $400-800 and it depends on how experienced you are regarding how often you will need to replace them. Entree Fee: Around $200 per event. You can learn more here: Website: http://norcal86cup.mkivsoopra.com/ Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/search/top/...up%20Challenge |

If it's your first time at the track, you don't really need to do any of any of that yet, though brake fluid would be a good start. Just come join us at one of the next events! If you're still on the fence, you can come hang out (bring a helmet), and some of us can even give you a ride around the track. :) |
If you haven't done at least 7 track days, NCRC requires you to run in Solo - which means you can't sign up for the 86 Cup for their events (which require Open or Point-by). The Speed SF and Speed Ventures events are OK.
In addition to entry fees and tire wear, you might also need an oil cooler, brake pads, and brake fluid. Also don't forget a helmet and gloves. And a sense of adventure! :) |
This will be my first experience on the track. I've only done one other auto-x but that was a long time ago. I have a helmet, which I think should be alright (was purchased for a motorcycle).
My car is complete stock (under 3k, original Primacy tires) so I'm sure if I get a new set, it'll be an upgrade from what I have. |
@Kabong - I definitely recommend doing the driving school at an NCRC event. You'll get a lot more instruction time and attention than with Speed SF. Some other folks I know have recommended Hooked On Driving's events for a first track day as well.
Doing a track day with NCRC on an 86 Cup day will give you the added bonus of hanging out with other 86 drivers. Doing a ride-along with someone experienced is a great way to learn, too. Last weekend was my 3rd track day ever. The experience was a lot more fun with a group of 86 drivers. And even though I'm not running in the 86 Cup yet, @mkivsoopra and the rest of the 86 Cup crew graciously answered my questions about how everything works. I've had a bunch of different hobbies over the years, and this is a really welcoming, genuinely nice group of people. |

Thanks for coming out to Round 2 and Round 3 of the NorCal 86 Cup, presented by GT Radial! We had some new drivers joining us, and a few more waiting to join! The relentless rain, bone-chilling cold, and wind made things more difficult, but didn't keep us from having fun!
Special thanks to our main sponsors, GT Radial, Winmax, Counterspace Garage, Elite Performance for making this happen. Please see below for the results from Round 2 and Round 3. On Saturday (Round 2), we ran Thunderhill in the Bypass configuration, and Sunday (Round 3) was Cyclone. Also note that Kevin has moved from Street class to Stock class, so his previous point total has changed to reflect the penalty. Full results can be seen at our website: http://www.norcal86cup.com/#standings We also have a new (simpler) domain for our website now: http://www.norcal86cup.com Please use this one going forward, but the old one is not going away anytime soon. The next events are on April 1 (no joke!) and April 2 with NCRC at Buttonwillow. The Point-by run group is already YELLOW for April 1, so sign up now!! http://www.ncracing.org/events.php #gtradial #winmax #counterspacegarage #eliteperformance #86drive #scottgrassophotography #86Cup #NCRC |
Thanks for gathering and posting the results. And cool that you updated the domain name. So rad that Kevin did a 2:11 in stock class. Nice to see Neal and Brandon battling it out, too!

http://scottgrassophotography.com/86...-buttonwillow/ Sorry to anyone I missed, more so the Sunday crew. I wasn't able to stay all day Sunday and only shot the run groups I was able to get to that morning. Next time! |
You da man, Scott!

Whoops, forgot to post the results from round 4 and 5 here. Be sure to join our Facebook group for the latest results and announcements! https://www.facebook.com/groups/norcal86cup/
Thanks for coming out to Round 4 and Round 5 of the NorCal 86CUP at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, presented by GT Radial! We had a large turnout, especially with a number of SoCal drivers coming out to join us! In fact, we had representatives from most of our sponsors at the track this weekend, namely from Winmax, Counterspace Garage, and Elite Performance. 86 Drive and Scott Photography were also at the track with us as usual, along with a number of new drivers to NorCal 86CUP! We had a bit of traffic for Round 4, but Round 5 was more clear and quite a few drivers set personal best times. Congrats! We also had a few drivers show us what the GT Radial tires are all about and put down some impressive times! On with the results... please see below for Round 4 and Round 5 results, and current standings are available at the website: http://norcal86cup.com/#standings Our next event is on May 27 at Thunderhill West, with SpeedSF. Remember to register early! |

Thanks for coming out to Round 7 of the 2017 NorCal 86 CUP, presented by GT Radial, at Thunderhill West! Those who braved the heat were rewarded with championship points, and some with free GT Radial tires. :) As usual, thanks to our sponsors for making this possible: GT Radial Tires, Winmax USA, CounterSpace Garage, Elite Performance, 86DRIVE.com, and Scott Grasso Photography. Also thanks to Speed SF Track Events for hosting and providing a safe and friendly environment for us.
Despite record temperatures, many of our newer drivers and veteran drivers were setting personal bests or setting impressive lap times. Congrats to everyone! Also congrats to Neal Wiebmer for the podium finish in the separate SpeedSF Challenge! See below for the lap times of the day, and visit our website for the current standings of the season: http://www.norcal86cup.com/#standings Summer has just started and we're more than half way through our season already, with 6 more events to go. The next event is the combined NorCal + SoCal event on July 15, at Sonoma Raceway. If you haven't registered yet, err... too bad, it's full. You might be able to get on a wait list, so contact Speedventures or Trackmasters for additional info, or try to pick up a spot from anyone who's selling. #GTRadial #winmax #counterspacegarage #eliteperformance #86drive #scottgrassophotography #speedsf |
Good luck to everyone!
Hello fellow 86 enthusiasts!
Ready for the next Round tomorrow at Sonoma Raceway? We'll be here at the top of the hill next to the Go Kart track during the 86CUP event. Free, fresh Bob's Doughnuts & coffee (while supplies last) and cold water as always. Also feel free to come by if you need air or to borrow a torque wrench. Good luck to all the NorCal and SoCal competitors!!! WORKS Team |

Hello! Thanks for coming out to Round 8 of the 2017 NorCal 86 CUP, presented by GT Radial, at Sonoma Raceway! This was a combined event with SoCal 86 CUP, and quite a few of them made the long trek from SoCal all the way to Sonoma. It was great seeing all of you again!
I'd like to call out our sponsors, who make these events possible: GT Radial USA, Winmax USA, CounterSpace Garage, Elite Performance, 86DRIVE.com, and Scott Grasso Photography. Also thanks to Speed Ventures for hosting! Sonoma Raceway is arguably the most technical and unforgiving track around here, so we usually take it down a notch. However, many of our drivers were still able to achieve personal bests and had a great time out there! See below for the lap times of the day, and visit our website for the current standings of the season: http://www.norcal86cup.com/#standings Because we have the region-specific GTRadial contingency program this year, we've kept the NorCal and SoCal times separate. Please visit https://www.86cup.us/results/ for the SoCal results. Our next event is a 2-day event at Thunderhill East on Aug 5-6. Register now, here! http://www.ncracing.org/events.php #GTRadial #winmax #counterspacegarage #eliteperformance #86drive #scottgrassophotography #speedventures |
Selling my point-by spot for this Saturday at Thunderhill (8-5) for cheap. PM me for details.

Also thanks to NCRC Racing for hosting this event! Please see below for the results from this event, and visit our website at http://www.norcal86cup.com/#standings for the complete season points. Thanks for coming out to Round 11 of the NorCal 86 CUP, presented by GT Radial, at Thunderhill West!
This event, we saw a handful of people move classes, namely: -Kevin from GT Radial Stock to Unlimited -Zijian from GT Radial Street to Modified -P. Stitch from Modified to Super Modified -JJ from Super Modified to Unlimited -myself from Modified to Unlimited Funny to see so many changes late in the season, but I guess we just love to modify our cars! A -25% penalty has been applied to drivers who move classes. Also thanks to our sponsors who make these events possible: GT Radial USA, Winmax USA, CounterSpace Garage, Elite Performance, 86DRIVE.com, and Scott Grasso Photography. Also thanks to Speed SF Track Events for hosting this event! Please see below for the results from this event, and visit our website at http://www.norcal86cup.com/#standings for the complete season points. Our next event is on November 11, at Sonoma Raceway, with SpeedSF, so don't forget to register! |

I'm like 45mins away from here. If time permits I would love to come by and watch and if given a chance get a ride. I did my first hpde here in Sonoma and it's really technical but really fun!!
Is there any entrance fee to watch or get a ride? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Results are in! Thanks for coming out to Round 12 of the NorCal 86 Cup, presented by GT Radial! The morning started out pretty damp here at Sonoma, and sessions were delayed while we waited for the fog to clear, but eventually, the sun came out and dried out the track. Good track conditions lead to many people having a good time, so I hope everyone had fun. We also had some local 86 owners come out to spectate and hang out. I want to see you guys on the track next time!! :)
Results for this event are attached below. Overall, the GT Radial Street Class is getting really close, with a bunch of drivers going after the cash prize! Our next and FINAL event of the season is on Dec 9, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca! Sign up if you haven't already done so, since it will fill up very quickly: http://www.ncracing.org/events.php And as usual, full results are available here: http://www.norcal86cup.com/#standings Also note that we're taking the best 9 out of 13 scores for each driver, so the points don't just add straight across. So far, I'm the only one affected by this rule. And finally, thanks to our generous sponsors for supporting us throughout the season: GT Radial USA, Winmax USA, CounterSpace Garage, Elite Performance, 86DRIVE.com, and Scott Grasso Photography. Also thanks to Speed SF Track Events for hosting this event! |
