Potential 86 New Owner - Pricing/Negotiating Qs

Hi folks,

Long long time lurker, 2nd-time(?) poster, and after years of following the car from it's concept days, I'm finally looking to join your fine ranks as a 86 owner.

I'm now in the market for a 2017 86 (white/manual) and have started the email 'give me a quote please' tango with a few dealers in my region (Seattle/Portland) to negotiate the best possible deal. This is after having test driven one last weekend and sitting through ~2hrs of some high pressure sales tactics, which I happily walked away from.

Did some browsing some of the ol' "how much did you pay" threads for some anecdotal numbers, but haven't seen a recent one pop-up and was hoping for a little input on realistic targets to hit to make me finally pull the trigger.

I've used resources like truecar, costco and such, to get a rough idea of where dealer invoice sits, but who knows how accurate that really is.

I'm aware there are several factors in play (region, timing, inventory, etc) but would you say that a ~$23-24k sale price is attainable?

Thanks in advance for the input :)

Cheers

No, probably not.

Look at the invoice price including delivery and that is the lowest you could get the car for unless they are willing to take a loss, which is unlikely. A couple hundred over invoice is probably the best price you can get.

Ah, got it. The figures I'm seeing would then put me at $25-$26 at ~invoice. If I'm around there, I'm probably doing pretty good and should negotiate up on trade-in.

Thanks, always good to hear a few opinions to temper expectations.

What are you trading in and does it have any value to the dealer ..... ??

As someone who works for a Toyota dealership, my suggestion to you would be to look up your local dealership(s) inventory and see if they have what you want in stock. If they do, see what options are on that particular unit. Go to Edmunds.com and build the car exactly as it is equipped, and put in your zip code. What ever the fair market price that they spit out would be a good deal, and one that they will likely take. If they say no, simply thank them for their time and move on.

I'm from the Los Angeles area, but I ended up at $29,500 OTD including tax and license for my 2017 MT in Raven. I tried the email / phone cal tactic, but with such limited inventory it was difficult to track down my car as is. Out of three dealerships, this was the best deal I got on the car. Not the greatest, but combined with the 1.9% financing I didn't mind.

Best of luck!

Got mine for $28.5k out the door. Managed to onlY get $500 off... And that's pushing it :(

Also curious, keeping an eye on this thread! I'm interested in getting a blue manual 86. Good luck getting the white one! Oh yeah, also in the Seattle area. :P

2009 Accord 2dr w/ 50k miles in great shape; clean title, zero issues mechanically and cosmetically (aside from normal-use wear n tear). Shooting for $8-$8.5 trade-in per NADA values.

Yep yep, that's essentially what I've been doing. Reaching out in-region dealers who have the car in inventory and getting a gauging their offers against the fair market values I'm seeing. For those that can't budge at all, it's no worries and thank you :)

Yeah, mark-up is fairly minimal and these certainly aren't the surplus of camry's and prius' on the lot I'm finding. Right now is about the most ideal time for me to get into one and the 1.9% is decent. Likely won't do much better unless I opt to wait until the 2018s show up... and wait and wait -- missing out on actually enjoying the damn thang for another year.

Thanks! If I have a good experience with a dealer and can lock one down soon enough, I'll try to remember to pass along the their info.

The price on the car itself was about $26,800 if that helps, which was down from the $27,209 sticker price on the car. The other two dealerships I talked to weren't willing to move off of the MSRP whatsoever. Overall I was comfortable walking out with the car since it was exactly what I wanted and the financing offer for 1.9% for 72 months was hard to pass up.

Best of luck!
