Is the stock OEM Panasonic battery 55D23L rechargeable?
My battery is completely discharged from not driving my car often.
I'm looking at the stock FRS OEM battery and it says on the label, "Do not charge or use booster cables or adjust post connections without proper instruction and training". I thought wet/flooded batteries can be recharged. I looked everywhere and can not find an answer to this. Is there anyone out there whose stock OEM battery died on them and if so, what did you do? Have you tried recharging the battery and if so, what happened? |
Yes of course you can charge them. Mine was dead when I bought the car on the lot. The dealer charged it awhile and it was good for three years.
Then I didn't drive the car for a few weeks and the battery got pretty low, so I put it onto a trickle charger/battery maintainer. It brought it back up and it is great now. |

It's just a disclaimer to protect against litigious assholes. Nothing special about the battery.

Remove terminal cables and put on 2amp charge. Done

Secondly, I'd suggest that you have your car's battery "load tested" at an auto shop ...... just to make sure it is up to speed (will hold a charge). The cautionary warning has been discussed.....:thumbsup: (after messing with the battery, DO NOT wipe your hands on your pants or scratch your crotch) humfrz |
I love this forum.

I charge mines every month. My daily trips are too short, doesn't charge the battery, so it's always weak.

I replaced my OEM battery with a AGM battery when the car was new. After about a year of sitting in the garage, I attempted to use the OEM battery for something else. It was COMPLETELY dead. Zero volts. I hooked it to a charger and it just plain would not take a charge.
Rather than throw it away, after all this was a brand new battery, this is what I did: I connected it in parallel to a bank of batteries I used for a UPS. The UPS is connected to a trickle charger. After about a month, I checked the battery in question and it was fully charged. It had come back from the dead. Two years later and it's still good (in my VW). |
I got myself a smart charger. If i am going out of town for a week. I would pull my OE battery out and charge it. The car is 3 and half year old and it is still fine.

Seriously, if your car's battery is healthy, it should be able to sit for at least a week and still start the car. humfrz |

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quick PSA: Lead acid batteries self-discharge. This means that even without the parasitic ECU/Radio standby loads, just storing a battery in the corner of the garage, it's best to hook up a float charger to keep it crispy and fresh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
Maybe it just keeps all them fancy do dad things on standby, ready to leap into action ..... :iono: humfrz |
Drove my car, left lights on 12min. Battery died.
Took significant other to mountain spot where you can see stars and town perfectly...20min of radio, battery died. Parked on side of college to call someone. 5min with all lights on, battery died. Checked cables, washed/scrubbed terminals, then jumped. Drove 1/2 hour then next day sat in car listening to music 10min. Guess what? Battery effin died. My father came by and said my car belonged in trash because battery wouldn't last. Then he said, "...by the way, liquid ok in battery?" I checked, was so low it took 5 water bottles approximately to fill. Ran for 20min around town. Car is perfect now. Moral, please check battery liquid monthly! Don't be that guy. |
The BRZ/FRS has pretty high parasitic drain just sitting. I ended up replacing 3 batteries in a year while learning more about this.
My dealer didn't have any idea what a normal draw was when they measured 125mA phantom draw on my BRZ. Then they measured their brand new one on the showroom floor and it was over 200mA. By comparison, the Forester and Outback are closer to 30mA. If I don't drive the BRZ for 2 weeks, the battery will read low or be flat. I left for 3 weeks once and came back to find it reading 2V. Also - if you have the keyless start fob and you park close enough to where you store the fob inside the house, the car and fob will continue talking to each other which will accelerate your battery drain. All fun lessons learned the hard way. |
I tested for a parasitic draw and the power windows drew the current Seems odd why. Anyone have a guess?, had my new Odyssey battery go after 3 days of no start. So 2 or more days I will put on a 2 amp charge .
|
Yeah, I didn't drive mine for 10 days, and the battery went dead. After 8 days of not driving it, it took longer to start. So I got a NoCo charger and will charge it once a week or so.
You mean the windows were drawing power all the time? Even with the car off? |
There will be times when I go out to the garage and I hear something electrical going on in the car, even though I hadn't driven it for several hours. It sounds like a humming. The sound seems to be in the rear, near the fuel tank. If I start the car up, and shut it off right away, the sound stops.
Any ideas on what that could be? |
Kind of disappointed that after 3 years on the forums you don't know the answer to this question. |
Understand the question, but the answer you were looking for didn't fit in to the discussion of weird battery drains. If it was a major source of drain on the battery, you'd 1) see more cases of dead batteries on this car, and 2) it'd be more of an issue across different types of cars utilizing a similar direct injection or modern evap system on vehicles. This is actually commonly found on many, MANY cars, not just our own. It is not a source of battery drain. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...+leakage+check -alex |
I think it's pretty obvious that I don't research dying batteries or evap systems in direct injection cars during my spare time. :cheers: |
