Deciding on a brake pad for light track use
 

I'm trying to decide on a brake pad to use on my completely stock 86, I use this as a DD but am planning on going to the track during the summer three times about one hour sessions each time. I want to purchase a hybrid pad as I live in a condo with no space to really change brake pads and I also have zero tools and knowledge.

I have zero track experience, I have been looking at the Stoptech 309 pads or EBC yellowstuff, my selection is a bit limited since I'm on Canada. (I'm travelling to Washington DC shortly so I can pick up different pads if someone has a better alternative) I assume all these pads for 2013-2016 will fit on the 2017? Additionally will these hybrid pads be okay in snow and extreme cold or should I switch back to OEM for winter time? (I also plan to use DOT 4 fluid, Motul 600)

If anyone can answer the above questions as I have been unable to find the answers to these kinda specific questions it would be appreciated.

Check out ft86motorsports.com. They are local to you and shipping is free, their prices are quite competitive. I'd say for a first timer a hybrid pad will be enough. Anything you buy on that site will be for the twins so you dont have to stress out on if it will fit or not. Unless you have a performance pack 2017, all pads are the same in size from 2012 to 2017 models.

His car is completely stock. I'd say DS 2500s are a good option for you. One our sessions are quite long, so you'll need to contend with heat build up. But if you need a single pad compound for track and daily use, you're definitely going to sacrifice somewhere (if not everywhere). The DS 2500 is probably the best option given your priorities and restrictions.

I'm guessing a street tire.

The stoptechs are cheap and handle a decent amount of heat. Some people have had problems with them but I am happy with their performance and haven't gotten uneven deposits.

Other pads to consider would be the Ferodo DS2500 and maybe hawk's street/race 5.0 (which is a relabled dtc-30), assuming they come in the right shapes.

Will be the stock tires I'm running, are all these hybrid pads okay to use in cold weather and snow or is OEM better for those conditions?

OEM is better for cold weather than DS 2500s, but not by much.

I use Ferodo DS2500 for DD and track use. As a track day novice the pads have held up fine for me so far and work well for DD as well. I've had no problems using them in cold weather. They put out a lot more dust than stock pads but it's easy to wipe off. Just keep in mind that any dual purpose pad is a big compromise between track pads and DD pads (just like all season tires).

I am in the same situation as you since i live in an apartment and hit the track every couple of weeks, so pad changes dont make much sense.

I started out with Project Mu HC+ pads which have a huge operating window on paper. They were very good, nice bite and easy modulation on track with gradual fading as heat builds up on hot Texas days. Somewhat grabby on the street and noisy when braking lightly. Only had a couple of cold days in Austin, but they were still noticably better than stock in terms of stopping power.

I since switched to Carbotech XP10 for continuous use, since my commute is very short and I can live with noisy and grabby pads on the street. These havent faded on me yet, lets see what happens when temps go up.

And yes Motul 600 is good, never had any issues with it.
