Motor Authority: "Subaru won't offer a turbocharged, STI, or convertible version."

For this generation anyway. Not overly familiar with their website, however they were linked from Yahoo. Seems like the usual BS speculation. Supposedly confirmed via Subaru. I think this information would shock absolutely no one, but figured I would pass it along.

WHAT!?!?!? You mean I have been waiting since 2012 for nothing!!

NLS8520 01-24-2017 04:02 PM

Yes allow that to set in, I know its truly shocking news.

DuMa 01-24-2017 04:07 PM

Toyota, you're up

ChimpMania 01-24-2017 04:07 PM

i realized a long time ago this car will end up like the 370Z where no major changes will be made and it will be the pretty much same thing every year

Fixed that for you.

Psilox 01-24-2017 04:29 PM

Perhaps they'll eventually be like the WRX where every model year is the same, so buying used costs you about as much as buying used :P Seriously though, I'm pretty happy with the mid-cycle changes, and looking forwarding to modding mine after the warranty expires for FI or whatever.

I agree. It prevents me from buying a new one in a few years!

Silver Cervy 01-24-2017 05:43 PM

Yep, and even if they do make one it will only be available overseas. They finally made a wagon version of the most recent wrx and then only offered it in Europe.

I know it's a stupid thought but I wish Americans actually gave a damn about cars.

~el~jefe~ 01-24-2017 05:51 PM

Triggered.

Or if they do change it it is NOT for the better!

To be fair, the 2nd Gen Eclipse was nice. So was the last generation of the 240/Silvia.

I think that has more to do with the fact that their owner base is a bunch of simple, vapeheaded cretins who think its acceptable to rack up 50,000 miles in about 3 years of ownership while slapping on a bunch of cheap shitty mods, and then turn around and sell their car for like 4 grand less than they cost new. I think the most mind blowing part is there is no shortage of other idiots lining up to pay it instead of walking straight into a dealership to buy a new one that they will know the full history of and will get more use out of.

Subaru has always held value due to their low production volumn. When I crashed my wagon 10+ years ago we actually got more back from insurance then what we paid. But yeah, hard to find a respectable used one now a days

ryoma 01-25-2017 04:09 AM

@Yardjass @finch1750
my brother has an 08 STI hatch with 60k miles. he says he can sell it for 25k as-is. I don't believe him. an almost 10 year old car can still sell for ~60% of the original price?

Easily.

Shit, a local guy just paid 24k for a '14 WRX!

Yardjass 01-25-2017 06:09 AM

Maybe I'm just a little sour because I was looking at the STI hatches to replace my Golf before I bought the 86. I gave up on that because the prices were so outrageous on all of them.

Then I looked at the new ones. The normal one didn't come with an LSD option and the STI has the old motor and horrible fuel economy. That was the end of that.

I was the same looking at 02-07 wagons. Rides woth 150k miles and people want like $12k for them still. And most had a bunch of knock offs for exhaust, wheels, etc that would take even more money to replace

There will be people that like all of them but they still changed a long way from what they started.

CarzCarzCarz 01-25-2017 11:02 AM

Back on the OP subject, hopefully they will do like the RX-7 and release a turbo for the 2nd generation model.

I think a Hybrid option is more likely than turbo.

gtengr 01-26-2017 11:30 AM

Hybrid would be fun, but given how budget-conscious the 1st gen design has been, I'd be surprised to see it. Perhaps I'm overestimating the current costs of implementing hybrid tech.

funwheeldrive 01-26-2017 11:46 AM

Prius C starts at 20k. I'm guessing by 2020 Toyota will really be pushing their hybrid tech.

By then everybody will!

finch1750 01-26-2017 01:04 PM

Tada has been on record multiple places saying he is interested in hybrid tech for power similar to KERS. But so far it is too expensive for mass production aince its more supercar type stuff currently vs. prius tech

gtengr 01-26-2017 06:01 PM

The Prius is FWD with a special CVT and high production numbers. Hybrid for an 86 with a conventional transmission/RWD will require a different system, likely one with the electric motor positioned in between the engine and trans. The chassis would have to grow to accommodate this, and there would be weight gain in the hundreds of lbs between the motor/battery/KERS. The more I think about it, the less likely it seems, both due to costs and the dimensional requirements/weight gain.

an electric BRZ would be interesting - solve that low and mid torque issue.
