2017 Steering Wheel
I'm reposting this here because it may get more traction, and because the links I got from the original post in the interior section were from this section.
I understand a few people made controls work. I'm curious if anyone has tried to retrofit a 2017 on the older models. Can someone with more electrical experience chime in with some wisdom or give their blessing that this is a possible task? Also, if anyone doesn't like their 2017 steering wheel and wants to trade wheels, let me know. |
I was thinking more about the fact that some 2016 models were retrofitted with the 2017 parts. How did they retrofit these parts on the cars? Did they change every wiring harness or did they make adapter harnesses so the headlights worked or so the steering wheel works? If they made adapter harnesses then they did it just for the retrofit and then updated the components with a simpler setup or they kept them as standard. Can anyone confirm this?

I was just thinking some more. I may have mistaken. Maybe those retrofits were for marketing or just to sell some remaining 16's with some 2017 components but there were so many changes that I'm realizing now they couldn't have done a complete retrofit. If anyone can help me here. Im drowning overthinking this.

I've done a similar swap like this on an older car I had. Had a 2006 Mustang GT which didn't have audio controls on it, I wanted the wheel out of a 2012 Boss 302. The harness was different, but I found a pin out of each and cut the plug off the old wheel, soldered it on to the new wheel matching up the wires and used a spare connector in the clock spring to pass through the audio controls.
Now the FRS/BRZ clock spring is the same one used in the Impreza if I remember, which means there should be enough pins to pass the signal through. May need to add a few pins to the existing connector as I believe only the horn is going through the clock spring on the older 86s. If I had access to a 2017 wheel I could probably make it work, the hardest part will be getting the factory radio to respond to the controls(but shouldn't be too hard since the headunits are shared across multiple cars as well and the pins are there on the head unit for controls. |
I think it has not been done by anyone because its just to expensive a the moment. On top of the steering wheel you have to get a new airbag and a few other things. That wasn't to deter you from doing it I was just stating why I think you really wont find a documented process yet.
So with that said, the clock spring has the same harness for the 86 as the FRS/BRZ (there is a picture of it on here someplace), its just missing some pins and wires. All the head units are steering wheel control compatible; you just have to find the right pins on the head unit (this part is documented on here someplace). So after purchasing the parts, steering wheel w/buttons harness, air bag, and any other connectors, its just a matter of connecting the clock spring harness to the rear of the radio. This part I would just run some wiring and connect it up myself. Chances are the female pins are the same ones used to connect the cd/dvd drives on computers and they snap right into the stock harnesses. |
Interested in this as well.
Are there estimates of how much the parts would cost? |
I'm gonna wait for a used wheel from someone who sells theirs because they went with a airbagless aftermarket wheel.
The wheel without controls is like $350 they the airbag is like $650 then the controls are more obviously. I won't be doing the new route. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
