Any way to key alike?
 

We've got 3 Subarus, all with factory push button start. Does anyone know if it's possible to "key" them alike so that my fob works on all 3 cars and so would my wife's?

All three pairs fobs look identical. I currently use different colored silicon sleeves to tell them apart. I'd love to be able to just be able to use one fob for all three. My dealer doesn't think it can be done.

Even if it could be done why would the dealer want to admit that is possible. What keeps you from then taking any fob and making it work with any subaru anywhere...so yea no this is not going to work.

Wow, you are lazy lol.

Why would you want one button to unlock all the doors all at once? Or do you keep them all parked very far apart at all times?

The dealer is correct, can't do it.

I disagree that it can't be done. They can change the coding if keys are lost so they can change it for that. It would cost way more than the convenience would warrant though.

I don't disagree that It can't be done but I doubt there is any dealer out there that would take that liability.

Any key can be programmed to any car, it cannot be programmed to more than one. We had a customer request the same thing and it couldn't be done, we tried.

Whatever the key is programmed to would have to have the same codes which on the twins I think the keys have to be programmed with the ecu and cluster which will never have the same code (I would think) as another ecu and cluster but it could be possible. Just extremely rare IF it was possible. There are articles out there about Honda's having the same key since there are only so many keys and codes to program.

Since there isn't an infinite set of combinations this is going to obviously be true, just most people don't think it through.

I had never thought about it until one day....

Way back in the day I had a '77 green Honda Civic CVCC Wagon. At the end of a visit to an amusement park one day I walked back out to the parking lot found my car, got in and started it. When I reached down to turn on the radio I realized my newly installed Pioneer headunit had been replaced with the original OEM radio.

That's when I realized I wasn't in my car!

Had it been two weeks earlier (before the radio was installed), I would have driven off with the car.

Imagine explaining that one to the officer.

I'll take the above as a "no". I was just hoping that our forum members might know something my dealer didn't. (Not necessarily a silly hope.)

iirc key fob is the one programmed and not the car. Key fob is blank, while car has the code and key fob receive and programed only 1 code.

So on this example:
Car 1 code = 123
Car 2 code = 456
Car 3 code = 789

Key fob can only program 1 of those code: 123, 456 or 789.
