Keiichi Tsuchiya compares his AE86 to the GT86
Not sure if this has been posted yet.
Pretty good video that I hadn't seen before, of Keiichi Tsuchiya comparing his AE86 and the GT86. Pretty fascinating to hear him talk about his philosophy on tuning his car, and how he turned a USD2,200 car into a USD40k+ one. I knew about this comparison that he did, but never found the video  |
Pretty much explains the whole rationale behind our cars - it definitely isn't about winning races...

Anyways, just watched the video! I loved it :) Crazy to think his owned the car for over 30 years now. That's my dream with my 86 :) Also, I must say...I love how he was rocking the Fujitsubo exhuast...though since he changes his exhaust every year I wonder what he has now in 2017. |
Damn his hachi sounds so nice

Brings back memories of the 80's....Great video!

I Aug 85 I purchased a new 85 GTI. A friend had purchased anew 84 Corolla SR5 and then traded it for an 86 Corolla GTS. Silver and black with a trunk. I drove it a few times and almost lost it on Jarvis leaving Keg Mansion in the winter with a downshift. It didn't occur to me at the time that RWD made this car unique. However FWD was taking over the market slowly and surely. The 86, with its playfulness was like riding a little bronco. I knew I liked it better than my GTI but it also cost a bit more at the time.

Performance is period related. As a kid I loved bikes and cars that were peaky and needed rpm. Today people want to select "d" and have 400 horsepower at their disposal. I don't necessarily blame them. The fa20s numbers would be exotic 25 yrs ago. Imo by today's standards that inexplicable torque curve holds it back. 1200 bucks transforms it though.

Even on the Subaru forum I'm on...people complain that the STI is "only" 300hp. In the populated areas, there is just way too many cars on the road all the time to ever be able to use that power. It's also annoying when people have cars with 300hp+ and still manage to only reach 70km/h when merging on the highway when your supposed to be merging with the flow of traffic. (100km/h) I think it just has to do with "look at me...I have more horsepower....I have money....I have a big house with 6 bedrooms but only me and my wife live in it" |
I agree with you. Where I live u couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a stop light and speeding on secondary roads will get u a ticket.

Over in this community there are always gonna be people complaining that the car is underpowered, but they usually don't stick around too long. I really enjoy this car with a full exhaust and tune for spirited driving. I do miss turbo and a bit more TQ sometimes when driving in the hills and dont feel like dropping gears to not lose speed but nowhere near enough to leave the twins |
Where the part Tanigushi drive both and give a review on both cars?
