2017 86 vs BRZ

So I am about to pull the trigger on a new Toyota 86 is this a good price?

Manual, w/trd exhaust 28k without 26500.

I then started to wonder about the BRZ which 2017 model would you buy and why?

Carbinebbq 12-31-2016 10:46 PM

I chose the BRZ because of the front. Not too sold on the way the 86's front looks. From what I've heard the BRZ interior has a little more bells and whsitles. I like the choice I made. Go test drive both. See how they look and feel in person.

if you can afford the BRZ with the performance package, I would get that (around 30k). I don't know if Toyota has a PP yet.

Yea that performance package looks real nice... nobody seems to have any of those in stock yet...

PP isn't out till January and I'd bet there won't be many showfloor models since there are currently a lot of customer orders already.

When I got my 2016 BRZ I initially was looking at the Toyota but then ultimately decided that for the money you get more bang for your buck as far as added little things with the BRZ. Picked up my limited for $26,200. really it depends what deals you can get and it you feel the added things are worth it beyond bare bones stock. If I had to choose and had the money I would get the 2017 BRZ PP for sure though!

Depends what your local prices are for the BRZ.

Is that pricing for a GT or a GTS model that you're quoting?

Here in Australia the 86 GTS's are around 41k RRP whereas the Premium BRZs (top model, think they're called the Limited in the US?) is around 38k RRP.

That's one of the big reasons I opted for the BRZ, that and the front bumper + WRB paint. To answer your question the reason I opted for the Premium (Limited) was that it was just a $1300 upgrade for a (subjectively) nicer interior, plus the heated seats will be great where I live since it tends to be a bit cooler year round.

It's a shame we don't get the PP option, but it's nothing the aftermarket can't solve down the track.

What colour are you thinking to get?

I sat for an hour in a toyota 86. 2017. I think it is a great deal, so much car and comfortable seats for the money. No need to spend extra on brz. It's just taste. I will be becasue of heated seats and some bling

Pay close attention to the nitty-gritty details between the two. Not sure about the US vs AU versions, but when I bought mine (in AU) Subaru did not charge for metallic paint, provided a full spare matching alloy wheel and tire (86 came with a repair kit), frameless mirror and a bunch of little detail stuff like the boot lid lining.

There is also a matter of servicing with Toyota requiring 6 month vs Subaru's 9 month servicing regime.

I also liked the idea of BRZ's simply being much rarer due to much lower numbers sold, which should help a little with value retention down the line.

All said and done it is your own money after all. Just be happy with which ever you decide to pull the trigger with. Sports cars, after all, are hardly a rational purchase anyway!

Seems like alot of differences when you look at options:
BRZ Limited w/ performance package gets the following that the 86 does not:

Engine start button
Leather seats
dual climate
brembo
black wheels
special shocks
Heated seats
Auto climate control
Auto door open on approach....

All this for approximately 3500 more...

What? BRZ Premium is cheaper than the 86 and you get more features standard.

ToySub1946 01-01-2017 01:23 PM

Not clear about the price you state. If it's out the door price, then good. If it's not out the door, then certainly not good. If you are picking up the car at Mars and having it shipped to Earth, gonna cost a bundle and not worth it.

I'm a current owner of a 2015 FRS.

For 2017 I'd buy the BRZ. Front end styling is not outrageous as is the 86.

BRZ still has red stitching on it's interior, 86 has gone to grey or silver stitching, and fuzzy fabric on right side of dash face. In my mind, that's a less sporty and more conservative design. Are they trying for the white collar crowd now ?

BRZ, base model is cheaper than the 86. 86 Price has gone up since 2016, and for what reason ?? Still the basic car that it was last year.

Base model of BRZ is now $760. cheaper than an 86. They each have the same equipment...it's a no brainer to buy the BRZ at this time.

If you want all the bells and whistles of the BRZ limited, it's just $1390. more than an 86.

Both 86 and BRZ now have, for 2017, a somewhat quieter interior, and a more compliant ride...sorry, not what I would want. Hey, it was supposed to be a sports car.

The good part, for manual trans cars, is an engine with stronger internals, just slightly more power. But they've changed the rear end ratio without changing the transmission ratios...so you end up with higher rpm in 6th gear at freeway speeds...and that's not a good idea in my mind. More engine noise and poorer mpg at freeway speeds...all in an effort to give seemingly more power in lower gears at lower speeds.

Those heated seats are magical... I love em.

I was not thinking about that comparison I guess.

One thing that popped into my mind is that if one finances, toyota is in house financing and those car company banks vs external tend to get one approved easier for loans. Subaru uses chase. Depends on ones credit, just a thought if anyone gets into a bind at time of sale.

One HUGE advantage to toyota is the ability to negotiate heavy as 86's are in stock items i noticed, not many, but subaru has 0 stock. An in stock at the end of the month plus some good hard negotiations could score a great deal
