Intentional gap in exhaust pipe

1 Attachment(s)
A mechanic at the dealer suggested a genius affordable way to make my car louder, by placing bolts between my extension pipe and the muffler to create a gap. He said it's okay, because it is behind the catalytic converter, so my car will run normally. Which it does. I just want to double check this though, because I don't want any problems in the long run. If it's not a good idea, how come?

Sure it will make your car louder but it wont make your car sound good....Not to mention it would be considered illegal in California.

Hello @Gixxerkid6hunid and welcome to ..... The Forum ......

Without reading through the referenced thread, I'll comment. I think it's a bad idea because (as mentioned) it will most likely sound like a bad exhaust leak. In addition, I don't think it's a good idea to have exhaust fumes, floating around under the car, especially in the winter.

If you would like to have your car make a bit more "sound", I would recommend an aftermarket muffler. Personally, I like what "nameless" has to offer:

Thought I stumbled onto the Civic forums somehow.

Wait, "at the dealer"? You have an exhaust related issue and the could say that this caused it and not honour warranty!

Will be loud and sound like absolute crap. Never thought I would say this but a $50 EBay catback would sound better.

And no more of the smug looking "mechanic" (or at least I presume that is who it is).

Because you are modding for the sake of modding, and not learning anything useful.

You could flip the carburetor air cleaner lid upside down and get some more induction noise too
