Externally Mounted Turbos / Hood exit exhaust Suggestion???

Hey there,
Since we all know how compact the engine bay is in the BRZ/GT86/FR-S especially with a turbo/supercharger kit added to it. I was wondering why nobody has come-up with a turbo setup where the turbo itself is mounted in a way where you don't cramp up the engine bay. Or why not even a hood exit exhaust so you don't have to have a exhaust pipe that goes all the way to the back of the car? I know it's 100% illegal in most countries but honestly I've seen crazier swaps/mods but nothing like I mentioned and most of the people who own the 86 have another car as their daily.

The only thing I found is a video of an Arab guy having a hood exit exhaust and that's it. Here's the vid :

Here are some pictures I found online (examples):

There is plenty of room.
One tiny rock away from a damaged turbo.
Some people value their hearing or breathing.
Some people don't want that much attention.
Some people actually want to be able to drive their car daily.
Some people don't want cut hoods.

Cole 12-15-2016 10:28 AM

I'd bet because 100% of the time, it looks stupid.

davmandave 12-15-2016 11:05 AM

That BMW is a photoshopped image. The shadow on the turbocharger is going opposite of the shadows from the tree, I think.

Summerwolf 12-15-2016 11:13 AM

Probably because

A) It isn't necessary, plenty of room in the engine bay
B) The bigger turbos can still fit in the engine bay
C) The engine bay is big enough for almost any turbo setups
D) Most engine setups couldn't make use of a giant turbo that couldn't fit in the engine bay, even then there is probably still room in the engine bay
E) The example you have still has room in the engine bay to route a proper exhaust. The turbo is in a common location even with its sizing
F) That noise.... open wastegate and exhaust, because racecar

There was that one turbo in the FI Kit thread that had one mounted near the rear axle. It was supposed to be cooler. It was incredibly inefficient though.

STS system, that brings about a whole other realm of turbo talk that should be avoided.

If someone were to sell a kit that could only dump from he hood they would be severely limiting their market. Not many people would deal with this because it's insanely loud.

spitfire481 12-15-2016 01:30 PM

I had a t4 67mm under the hood with no issues. Could have ran a 76 with the same cover profile just fine as well. Exhaust exited the lower passenger side of the front bumper. It was quite loud fyi

It is not compact at all. So many kinds of superchargers and turbo kits fit just fine.

Where is the turbo? I can't take my eyes off those wheels :)

I could use a good payout...

PandaSPUR 12-16-2016 03:00 AM

What everyone else said. No one's done it because:
1. Its noisy
2. An exposed turbo without a filter will get damaged real easily during daily driving.
3. Theres plenty of room under the hood for any turbo that would actually be relevant for our engine.

GsxrMe 12-16-2016 08:24 AM

Noisy is an under statement. My Turbo Hayabusa has a dump and its just ....... fuck loud. Feel bad for anyone on the right side of me.

Bisofication 12-17-2016 02:00 PM

Wow, the amount of trolls who can't read the first thread was above my expectation but thanks for the rest for their thoughts about the setup :)

wbradley 12-17-2016 02:04 PM

Yeah that would look rad with a cone filter sticking out the front of the car!

Or, we could play a game called, "How many seconds before the turbo sucks up some debris and disintegrates"?

KnightRyderx2 12-17-2016 02:31 PM

Got a couple Evo 8s around here that do the hood exit exhaust, damn its loud and sounds insane. I had an open wastegate on my Evo 3 and when that thing opened up it was loud, but it dumped about a foot off the turbo downward.

continuecrushing 12-21-2016 06:25 PM

jokes aside, I do want to have a hood exit exhaust, or like tuercks side/front fender exit.

Would need to have an exhaust valve to switch, because as people have mentioned it would be rather loud

Trolls? I haven't seen a troll in this thread actually.

That doesnt sound like a bad idea, have a normal exhaust flow for daily driving and switch to hood exit for track days, meetups and shows.

I hate the look of actual pipes sticking out of the hood though.

Yeah, I wouldn't have some weird diesel looking pipe sticking way the hell out-just something flush with black/cf plate around it.

Be prepared to drive with the windows up all the time! Never drove a street car with hood exhaust but did have short side pipes that came to the front of the doors on one once. Eating exhaust and being deafened all the time got old real fast.

Yea hell no, I wouldn't do this to my own car. I have thought about doing an electronic exhaust dump before, but towards the end of the mid-pipe.

Sportsguy83 12-22-2016 10:42 PM

That's @SmsAlSuwaidi car

ShadowReaper 12-22-2016 11:46 PM

because it looks stoooppidddd as f***

empower-auto 12-23-2016 12:48 PM

Let's be honest. This fad of hood exit exhaust is for lazy people or people doing it for the gram .. or poorly thought out swaps that make exhaust routing challenging. There's no reason to be doing it.

turtlefeeder 12-23-2016 03:03 PM

Looks sort of ghetto and messy imo. Maybe on a pure drag track car is alright since it's more for performance than a clean look. Than again there's plenty of decent looking drag car that wouldn't need to butcher their hood for for power 😵😵😵
