Shifter rattle

I recently replaced my clutch and throwout bearing because the bearing collapsed on me. Once I got the car put back together I noticed it has developed a rattle in the shifter. At first I thought I just forgot to tighten the rear shifter bushing, but I went back under the car and it's just fine.

I found that when it is rattling I can push it between 5/6 or over toward reverse and the rattling will stop. I'm guessing it's the shift linkage. Everything is together like it should be.

Upon further inspection there is some sort of green grease looking stuff on the transmission tunnel above where I believe the linkage goes in... any ideas?

Does it only happen when above 4000rpm?

Mazikowski 12-06-2016 07:18 AM

No, it happens at idle and low rpms mostly.

Green grease? Do you have a kartboy short shifter?

Those are cursed with rattling but usually at higher rpm. It is because of the reverse lock out spring.

Nope, stock shifter. The grease is further up the tunnel. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...505c05c28a.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...9a0283f26e.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...44468c3ae3.jpg

Here it is sitting in a parking lot at a warm idle.

Not to jack the thread but I actually have this issue lol, is it common? I hear a buzz/rattle from the shifter when I'm accelerating hard, especially in like 3rd gear. If I put any slight pressure on the shifter while in gear, the buzz stops. I have a Perrin RLO but I had that installed months before I ever started hearing this noise.

@Mazikowski where is the rattle noise originating from? Under the shifter? In the video it's hard to get an idea for any positioning on the rattle.

@treminaor it sounds like it's under the shifter, yeah. Not like the shifter is loose, but a little further down. Like I said, at first I thought it was the rear shifter bushing based on where it was coming from.

Have you tried running the car with the shift boot off to see if you can further narrow down the noise?

Not yet, but that's a good idea. I'll give it a chance when I have time to take the interior back apart.

Yeah, it's a common issue. I believe it's from the reverse lockout ring.

Guys, that's coming from inside the transmission. Something about the gear selector components is slightly out of adjustment or sticking. I haven't yet had mine apart but I've heard similar.

Try while running at a standstill with clutch engaged just like in the video clip. Nudge the gearshift towards third and fourth ever so slightly. Does either direction make it stop or get worse?

I crawled back under the car this weekend to have another look around. Turns out one of the nuts holding the transmission mount bushing to the mount had backed off so that the bushing was able to flex and was causing the rattle. I replaced the nut and haven't heard anything since.

I got a new transmission two weeks ago and I *think* the rattle I had over 4k RPM ever since I bought the car is gone!
