So I've tried both Windex and Invisible Glass for cleaning my windows, and neither are up to the task. Both of them, on my wife's car and mine, do not do a good job of cleaning off that oily whatever it is and leave smudges. If I clean the glass 5 times, I can get it clean, but it is a pain to spray and wipe (with a ton of elbow grease each time) the whole windshield 5 times in a row just to get rid of smudges.

Anyone have a better product that is tint safe? The guys at the carwash have this foam stuff that seems to work great, but I have no idea what it is.

what oily substance is being left on your windows? try some dishwashing soap to degrease the windows then finish it off with a glass cleaner.

Are your cleaning towels possibly the problem? Invisible glass should leave nothing but clear glass.

@kravi Meguiar's D12001 Glass Cleaner Concentrate 1 gallon. Dilutes 10-1 with distilled water, gives you a TON of glass cleaner to work with. Keep your old bottles of windex or invisible glass to use this with.

Also use with an Invisible Glass Reach And Clean tool, and get a 3-pack of the bonnets. This will allow you to buff the inside window without cramping your neck and shoulders.

Also following on what skylinekin was saying, I keep my towels separated in plastic storage bins and hand-wash them after every use. Really important to keep your glass towels free of contamination.

Och, I don't know Captain, I don't have the power! Okay, now that I've stopped channeling Scotty, I really do not know what is causing it. It is both my wife's and my vehicles, and she does not share any of my vices (an occasional cigar while smoking).

98% alcohol? Meguiar's? What is the difference. In a perfect world, I just want to spray, wipe, and be done with it...

The towels I use are washed in the washing machine, and dried in the dryer. I do not, however, use fabric softener when washing my microfibers...

You might try a water/vinegar (50/50) solution, followed by Invisible glass cleaner.

Complete agreement; Invisible Glass works great for me, too. CLEAN microfiber towels, turned frequently, really help. You can do OK w/ those blue paper "shop" towels, and regular paper towels in a pinch. I don't wash my windows enough, so when I do I typically have to go through two spray'n'wipe sessions to truly get "invisible" glass (except for the constantly accumulating sand-blast effect from driving a lot), but never five. As others have said, my bet is that you're adding grease or something from whatever you're using as a towel. Fabric softener in your laundry? Paper towels w/ some sort of additive? Dunno... just guessing... posted mostly because I've really been impressed w/ "Invisible Glass" in both spray and aerosol formats over the years, and don't think that's the problem.

Could this "oily substance" be vinyl fog? The plastic in cars lets out a gas that can coat glass, and be a oain to get rid of. I've had the best luck with Invisible Glass, try using a little less, spray some on the cleaning towel, then wipe the glass.

Over time, the plastic will gas off less.

@kravi Meguiar's Glass Cleaner is Water, Butoxyethanol, and iso alcohol. The reason I recommended it is that it dilutes 10-1 with distilled water, you get better value out of a single gallon of it than buying individual bottles of spray glass cleaner.

The best combination I've used is Adams Glass Cleaner with Chemical guys glass towels. I've never had an issue with that combo, and it's tackled everything I've thrown at it. It makes a huge difference when you use a glass specific waffle towel compared to a microfiber towel.
