What other cars have you looked at?
Hey Guys and girls
I'm looking at getting a car at around the budget of a used FRS-BRZ, 15000 to 20000$ CDN I already looked at a V6 mustang which i found numb feeling. I'm thinking of CIVIC coupe , Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Fiesta ST, Fiat 500 Abarth I drove an FRS and love the driving dynamics but the power was lacking ( I will need to mod it significantly to get the have the right kick in the pants feeling --- 5000$$$ minimum) I'm curious as to what you looked at before deciding to go FRS /BRZ or if you've had any of the above mentioned cars and why you changed to an FRS/BRZ :thanks: :party0030:  |

While I was cross-shopping a lot of different new cars when I bought the 86, there was nothing else at the same price point (new) I had any interest in at the time. Everything else new I was looking at ranged from $10,000 to $40,000 more expensive.
None of the cars you mention hold any level of interest for me. Had I not gotten the 86 I would have ended up in the used market most likely. Since I have no aversion to used, no telling what I would have ended up with in that price range. |
Fiat 124, Hyundai veloster turbo, and Focus ST were all in my price range but 2 were FWD and the fiat was just plain weak. Settled with the 17 BRZ as it handles extremely well and has enough power for the roads I drive on.

Okay so what are you looking for in a car?? Fuel economy, power, rear seats??
I got the FRS because I enjoyed driving it so much, now its a racecar but I still enjoy it just as much even though its no longer practical for a DD. If I did what I have done on another car I wouldn't probable enjoy it as much. |
Used CLK55 AMG. I really liked it. But, decided against it because of how often my moms S600 was in the shop.

Test drive a speed3. Had one, loved it! Just FWD though.. but its a hot hatch :D

You're not going to find many inexpensive 2+2 RWD sports cars in the market at all. if you remove "GTs" (by filtering for weight under 3200 lbs) and "affordable", then the 86 stands alone. It is truly a unique offering.
Expensive but under 3200 lbs Lotus Evora 400 - Expensive Audi TT Coupe - Expensive Inexpensive but above 3200 lbs (GTs rather than Sports cars) Chevy Camaro Ford Mustang Hyundai Gen Coupe That's all I can think of. There are more than enough good FWD Hot Hatches that can be had for $15k-$25k. I'd recommend the same as noted above. GTi, Fiesta ST, and Fiat 500 Abarth. Used cars beyond 5 years I would not recommend as a sports car that has to be reliable enough to be a daily driver. People beat on fun cars and they break too often to be good DDs if you don't know their history and your job relies on it. |
Used corvette.
I think a BRZ is faster than a fiesta ST, but you just don't get the mid range turbo surge feeling. Those things are pretty fun to drive but "meh." Maybe a caliber SRT4 if you could find a clean one. One of the most hilarious vehicles to drive ever. All depends since your vehicle list is all across the board. |
Totally depends on what you want, 86 is either a dream come true or a living nightmare or somewhere in between.
More sporty: Miata More power: Charger/Camaro/Mustang/Genesis/370Z More practical: Mazda3/Mini Hardtop/WRX/Abarth/Golf/GTI/FoST/FiST/Veloster, maybe Fit/Mazda2/Toyota iA Looking at used cars quadruples the list, pick your poison, time is good to be a car enthusiast. |
"MOAR POWAH !!!!!!!"
yeah, no This is the only new car built in the last 20 years that has interested me at all. |
I cross shopped several cars before I got the BRZ. Genny Coupe, V6 Camaro and Mustang, RX8, Civic SI, 350Z, E46 M3. Keep in mind I was shopping in 2013 so the situation was quite different than it is now.
I was turned off the driving dynamics of the V6 Camaro and Mustang. Their weight made the power feel no better than the BRZs. I loved driving the RX8 (dat 9000rpm redline doe) but I was turned off the maintenance schedule and all of the examples I could find were relatively high miles. The Gen Coupe felt fine but I was turned off by the widespread transmission issues and piss-poor braking system. The 350Z and E46 M3 were both serious contenders. They're both much faster than anything else I tested but I decided I wanted something newer and something that wouldn't bankrupt me if it broke. I was actually going to get a Civic SI before I bought the BRZ but the one I was looking at got scooped up from under me. I had agreed to meet the seller that weekend to pick it up and sign the paperwork then he messaged me on Friday to let me know he had just sold it to someone else. Was not impressed. I saw the BRZ at this point and decided to go that direction instead. |
