Road & Track: 5 minutes to a faster FRS (/BRZ) via Tires

Road and track did a tire test on the FR-S, comparing the following:

Stock wheels/tires
Stock wheels/215/45/17 Dunlop Star Specs
235/40/18 Star Specs.

The results were interesting, take a look.

Stock tires not grippy

Starspecs in OEM size are grippy

Starspecs in larger size are slower than OEM starspecs

All of this should be no surprise to people who understand contact patches and all that stuff. Wider/larger is not always better.

(unless you address the entire system)

No lie, this is probably the most repeated thread topic. And it really isn't worth anything since the tests they perform aren't worth anything.

Sorry, fellas.

I just like the fact that an "underpowered" car with proper summer tires beat out 2 turbocharged 4 bangers, for both of which I hold a great deal of respect.

Would have liked for them to do a 235/40/17 as part of the test.

Just did a little bit of research and found that the DW weighs about ~27lbs and the OEM tires weigh about ~20lbs. Does anybody know how much of an effect this has on fuel efficiency?
