Calabogie Track Days

Cranked off a 2:29.2 in the neon yesterday on long track. We are running short track today!

jvincent 07-06-2014 03:56 PM

Car is ready for Friday. Just changed the oil and put the track pads on.

Trac Toy 07-06-2014 07:25 PM

I'll be there Friday as well. 9-5

See you both there. And congrats Eric for the win on Saturday. I really need to get myself a seat for a race next year.

jvincent 07-11-2014 10:55 PM

Good to meet you guys in person today.

Kind of bummed that I had to leave early, but the cold sweats and almost hurling during my last lap were a definite sign I was done. I felt like ass on the drive home so I'm sure I couldn't have made it through another session.

Good news is I picked up the new wheels after I got home.

Nice to meet you, too. I didn't make it to my last session either. I went for a ride along with that M3 sedan (that was beside us) and then with Eric. I don't get car sick at the track but I think the combination of the g-forces and sun hit me as soon as I got out of the car. Had a bit of a headache going so I called it a day too.

Yep, great to meet you John, glad you had fun and I hope you enjoyed the lapping that the ASE club provides.

Great seeing you again Brian! How'd you make out on Saturday?

I managed a best of a 2:34.xx not bad considering it's my first time at bogie with the frs on long track.

jvincent 07-15-2014 08:13 PM

Hey Eric, I had a good time. Lots of fast cars with the ASE guys.

My best time was 2:51, which was better than my first time out. Still lots of room to improve.

engsr 07-15-2014 08:38 PM

Eric, I ended up with a 2:37 as my quickest. Looking at the data, I figured out that I'm braking too early, too much, or a combination of both. You noticed during the ride along and pointed it out, too, especially at Mulligans and Crown. Those two zones are my known problem areas. I really need to get an alignment so the tail isn't so lively under braking (read, need toe in).

Funny, when I had one of the instructors ride along with me I had the opposite problem.

I'm braking too late and not hard enough when I start so I end up having to brake harder later and end up missing my turn in points a lot.

On a positive note, I think I have a line figured out for temptation that works for me.

Eric and I were talking about this and we concluded that the exit into Deliverance is probably more important than the entry into Temptation. I tried different lines in and different placements of the car at the outer cone at the bottom of the turn and I noticed that exit line is the key. Unfortunately, I didn't set up my GTech to do segments so it's a little involved to extract the data. But in my last session, it felt like I finally got a good line out of there and seemed to carry more speed into Crown.

The other thing I noticed was that I wasn't any faster shifting into 2nd there. Leaving in 3rd was actually faster, believe it or not. Same thing occurred in Throat. I attribute it to braking too much while shifting.

Missed this before - I actually had a good time at Lot 9, Saturday. I finished 2nd in class and 7th overall (out of 70ish people). Could have done better but I was way too lazy to tinker.

Yeah, that's what I was meaning. My first day out I had a hell of a time getting out of of Temptation and into Deliverance.

One of the guys I rode with this time had me do Temptation as essentially two turns.

By that I mean at the very bottom of Temptation he had me go straight at the the cone on the far right and then turn in to the Temptation exit/Deliverance entry. It worked much better for me than doing it as one long turn.

engsr 07-15-2014 11:30 PM

Ha, yes, I know exactly what you mean. I discovered that at the end of the day the last time I was there, so this time I was hoping to figure out a good line through Temptation to set me up on exit/entry to Deliverance. Think I figured it out, just need to work on carrying more speed.

Good to hear you guys reviewing your laps.

For T5 Mulligans, you want to do most of your braking before the crest but still manage the brakes as you get down to the bottom of T5, before you setup to get and stay on inside of 6 for the exit.

To be smooth through Temptation, it needs to feel as 1 corner and yes, exit is very important so make sure to keep looking up and get back on the gas at the right moment to get a good exit toward 9A. Gas too early and you'll push wide to the curb and have to correct.

I use 2nd in Beak 12A to get a better run out of it toward T13 and 14 and the car is still pretty settled, but I stay in 3rd to get out of T14 otherwise it gets too loose.

The fastest way around the track is the one where you get the best entry to a "sequence of corners" and the best exit out of them. A perfect example is Turns 2 to 4. Treat this as a sequence instead of individual turns and you'll get more speed. Same for 9a,9b and 10 and 10-12, also the Quarry complex.

Hoping to get int the 20's on Monday, best so far is a 2:30.00 but I'm also lugging heavier wheels and bigger tires around.
