Damaged clear coat on hood

Clear coat seems to fracturing near some chips on the hood. Damn rocks with this soft paint. 2013 with 30K miles on it. Whats the best way to go about fixing something like this? Hood has numerous chips now :(

Sure it hasn't been repainted at some time?

No, I bought the car brand new.

It looks like it's on the surface to me. Have you tried to buff it out yet?

teamturbo 11-19-2016 11:04 PM

No I haven't, perhaps that would do it. I might swing by a professional shop to ask their opinion. It's certainly not swirl mark deep. Fully exposed down to the paint and in some areas down to primer.

Oh, as suggested, I'd try buffing them out. If that doesn't work, I'd just wax over them and drive on.

It is tough to make out in a picture, I just wanted to ask is there any chance that could be sitting on top of your clear coat, have you tried some dawn detergent or an automotive all purpose cleaner? I am sure its not but it looks a lot like tree sap to me. If it is in fact clear coat failure it would require a repaint nothing you can do, although if you find that is the case might want to contact Toyota Corporate HQ see if there is anything that can do to help with that, there is no reason a normally cared for 4 year old car would have clear coat failure unless its defective.

I have hundreds of chips on my hood and none of them look like that. They just look like chips with zero effect on the clear coat around them.

The picture is a bit blurry, but it looks like the same type of damage I had on my trunk lid. Mine was from a bird dropping that was left on there too long. Because I planned to swap out the trunk with a carbon fiber one I wanted to see how far the bird droppings etched through. I started to wet sand, went through the clear coat and the etching was still slightly present. The paint on these cars are fragile. I have a few more marks on the roof and quarter panel similar to that and now I know a respray is the only fix for them unfortunately.
