Sorta-slow speed hit in the rear, what to do?
 

Thanks, dude! I always like my two month old cars to get rear-ended by a douchebag. I hope his test got sent.

Sitting in a long line of traffic going uphill at a stop, take a look in the mirror and see clown well behind me. Check again, WTF, thump. Not a terribly hard hit, Kia something or other SUV. Plastic-to-plastic, some very minor paint damage.

What to do? I'm worried about internal problems, and to check the bumper needs to come off. I HATE taking apart new things, because they then are forever a problem. If the bumper comes off, might as well fix the paint. And since I did call the insurance dudes, I'm assuming my car now shows and accident.

His agent did admit fault, so all is well.

What would you do? I don't want to be a ****, but damn.

Do you have any pictures so we can see what kind of damage is there?

Internal problems, from a love tap? Hardly any chance.

Also..... With out pics it's totaled in my book. Go buy a Civic.

File a claim with the other driver's insurance company. Make them pay to fix it. Make them give you a rental car while yours is in the shop. They should take care of you. And if they don't, sue them.

It's probably minor, but if I'm not mistaken there's a styrofoam pad under there that is probably smashed, and the metal on this car bends easily. The plastic bumper can pop back out and mask all that. Get the body shop let you see it yourself once they get the bumper cover off, so you know what's being done and that it's being done correctly.

Don't worry about the crash being on the record. It won't make enough difference to the value of the car (if any at all) to justify eating the cost of the repair yourself.

Car is in the barn, and it's covered in nasty, muddy crud. Honestly, the paint damage would probably respond to some buffing and touch up paint. It's the possible internal damage I'm worried about.

Like I said, I don't want to cause the dude any issues, but the did hit me.

Sigh, I guess I'll have it looked at.

I was told we have eight(!) years to file a claim in Oregon.

Well now, that's a shame your new car got bumped.

Accept a settlement from the other drivers insurance company and then have a PDR person push out the dent (if any), buff it out and apply some touch up paint, if necessary.

Life is too short to get all upset over a minor scrape on a car.

Have the car fixed. Take it to a reputable shop. We pay ridiculous amounts for insurance so use it. Best of luck.

It is a bit of a paradox though that every time somebody uses that expensive insurance it costs the rest of us more.

Mine was tapped at an intersection. I stalled it when the light turned green and the young girl behind me was texting or something. I'd only had the car a month or two. There was no paint damage, but when I pushed on the bumper plastic, it seemed to push in too far not that I knew how far "too far" was. But nothing felt the least bit loose. I told her not to worry about it.

That was 100,000 miles ago and there has been no issue.

When getting my oil changed at the dealership I did push on the same part of the bumper on a brand new one and it did not push in as far. But There was not really that much difference.

It's never been an issue.

I gotta say, though, I'd really avoid having any part fixed if at all possible if it requires repainting. It may look perfect the day you get it back, but give it a couple of years...

No reason to not be a ****; somebody has got to teach douchebags lessons. Just take it in to dealer and have them check everything. I don't know if they would go so far as taking frame measurements. But at least have them remove the rear cover to make sure the foam and barrier aren't damaged.


Then, send the bill for the inspection to the douchebag.
