Father-In-Law Wrung It Out
 

I let my father-in-law drive the car this evening at 390 miles. I've been careful to follow the break-in procedure despite being 90% sure that it was written by lawyers, and let him know to keep it below 4k. He drove it about 20 miles, mostly over 5k, down his favorite motorcycle routes, with a few 7k runs.

I'm not terribly happy about it, but obviously the car did just fine. Now, do I bother continuing with my "easy break-in?"

I personally think break-in procedure is not needed in a modern car. They probably tested every car before ship them out of the factory.

You will get 5 people in here with 9 different opinions. The engine is beyond done break in at this point (rings seating, etc.). Bed in your breaks properly and go easy on the clutch, you'll be fine.

:coolpics: Probably going to have to wrap it up to about 6k before you really can know you can reset and begin the real break-in process, which should take 6-8 weeks or 4000 miles. Good rule of thumb is always however many RMPs you want to rev, you should drive that many miles first. Me, I like to drive lots of RMPs cos thats how it roll, so thats what I do. guy sounds like a douche bag, completely ignoring your polite request to keep it tidy. Now I know revenge isnt the best course of action, but Id be ready for a bit of revenge.

lol i hate people like that, even worst when you cant really say anything because hes your father in law. should have just avoided people who you cant say no to for the first 1000 miles. thats my plan.

I am often amazed at people who "can't say no" to other people. It's my car, my money, and if I say "no, I'm breaking it in and don't want other people touching it at this point" they better respect that or they can just walk away. Father in law, boss or friend.

To be honest, I wouldn't ASK a guy with a brand new car to drive it. I would take the offer if one is made, though. Then I would politely ask about reservations he/she might have. Common courtesy in my mind.

That shit pisses me off. I would never ask someone with a new car to drive it. Well I might but I wouldn't be serious about it and would have no qualms about being told no.

If anyone told me yes I then would probably still decline out of respect and if I didn't I'd clearly ask them how they'd like me to drive it and respect that.

What your father in law did is just disrespectful. I agree with the suggestion that you should flog his daughter hard as a form of revenge.

Let her know her father brought this on her and take her over 4,000 RPMs!

I take it you were with him on the "test drive"??
Why not go over to his, ask if you can "test drive" one of his cars/bikes and just sit on the drive bouncing it off the limiter...?
Then you can call it square and walk off not having to "say no" to him or discuss the finer points of his test drive...
