DIY - Simple Glove Box Light
 

This is a simple guide to add a glove box light to your 86 or any vehicle for that matter. You probably don't even need to use this guide to do this, but my intention was to make people aware that this light is available and stupidly simple to use.

There are absolutely no wires to splice or cut, this is a simple stick on and you're done :thumbup:

I bought a motion sensing light bar from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KO4W6VM/), and used the included 3M double sided tape and stuck it to the roof of the glove box. Now, whenever I open the glove box, the light comes on. Once you close the glove box, and there is no more motion, the light will turn off after a few seconds.

The particular model I bought was rechargeable with a microusb port. It also came with a removable strip magnet, meaning you can remove the light bar from the glove box any time you want and put it back on by simply attaching the light bar back onto the magnet. The other side of the magnet is the 3M double sided tape that you stick to the roof of the glove box.

I can either use the 12V port located in the glove box and use a car charger that has usb on it to charge it, or I can detach the light bar and charge it at home. It says the charge is good for 3.5 hours of continuous on time. Being that I rarely open the glove box, it will only turn on when it senses motion, so the light would probably last a few weeks/months before it needs to be recharged.

I don't think there's any worry of it turning on, there's probably not enough motion in there by itself. I haven't noticed it myself.

There is a little issue with the motion sensitivity though, as I sometimes have to wave my hand across the sensor because it doesn't turn on after opening the glove box. It only happens a few times though, when it is in absolute darkness. Even if it doesn't turn on for any reason, you can always switch it to always on mode instead of motion sensing mode, then off when you need to.

an alternative, you can also buy an LED strip and then run the wire through the cabin to the small fuse box under the driver side dashboard and hook it up to parking lights fuse with an add-a-circuit.... that way when you have your lights on presuming you are driving when it's dark outside so your glovebox will have the LEDs already lit up when you open it

Nice idea. I was going to wire up something in the car but frankly my custom headunit hookup behind the radio is already such a rat's nest, I don't want to tap anything else into it. I also don't trust those "add a circuit" fuse plugs, those seem sketchy as hell. I'll just buy the AAA battery version and change the batteries once a year, no big deal and super easy install.

i installed my foot well lighting using an add a circuit connection and i didn't any issues at all ...had them installed for two years now....definitely better than user quick wire splices

I have to say this works way better than I expected, thanks for idea.

I installed mine yesterday as well - probably a little too bright in the darkness of night but I can fix that with some semi opaque black tape.
