Buying BRZ with replaced engine
I'm currently shopping for a BRZ and came across one that's in good shape but has had the engine replaced. The original engine got water in it through the cold air intake.
Is this something you all would consider or not? Not being a mechanic, it seems like the factory-installed engine may be more solid. |
If it's been installed properly and it's not crazy high miles, shouldn't be much to worry about.
|
Sure, they may say it was water ingested through an intake, but make sure it's not a flood car. They often have all sorts of electrical/rust issues down the line.
|
the intake for this car is pretty high up unless they re-routed it with a custom CAI setup. if large amounts of water was able to get sucked through that high up, I would be skeptical of the rest of the car.

http://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/ho...maged-car.html http://auto.howstuffworks.com/under-...amaged-car.htm If it's not a flood car it's probably fine. Most of the junkyard motors for the car are low mileage examples that probably got drifted into light poles and trees. If it's not a junkyard motor then it's probably a crate motor. Consider getting a 3rd party mechanic to inspect, which is always wise when buying a new car if you're not sure what you should be looking for. |
Like others said, make sure it wasn't in a flood. If been factory replaced or you proper paper work from a shop. It should be ok.
I would look over the car real good and make sure I'll have some kind of warranty. |
According to the seller, it was driven through about a foot of water and did not sit in the water.

Hes probably not lying. Didn't sit in the water. Probably floated.
|
And I'm guessing some of these problems wouldn't arise until some time down the road? He says he's been driving for five months but that may not be enough time for otehr issues issues to show up?
|
I'd just find a car with a nice record and low price. These things are cheap, and people sell them for nothing. Why buy one with a questionable history?
