Rear quarter glass smashed.. Replacement advice please
Hello,
I had my car broken into last night :( I had a hoodie in the back seat and some low life broke the window to see if I had something underneath it. I had glasses, headphones kind of visible, and random crap in the front that they ignored...I see ebay has a lot of windows for sale, all like this: http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/rMQAAO...GUE/s-l500.jpg How would I even install this? or am I looking at a professional install only? Could I also just find the glass portion only and have that installed? http://i67.tinypic.com/v4p4ww.jpg Thanks! |
I have done full body off restorations a couple of times, fully rebuilt engines for drag cars and totally changed full suspensions. You could not force me to do glass work at gunpoint! Personally I would pick up the glass cheap take it to the pros to put in.

Insurance won't cover it? Most policies replace glass with no deductible. Check your insurance before paying for it out of pocket
|
As said check with insurance first. I had a couple windows fixed for free, but all insurances are different. Whatever it is go to the pros. Window installations sucks balls and its easy to mess it up.
A while back, my old Blazer got broken into over night. I had stereo system with amp and sub and a few other things in there. All they took was my Samsung earbuds that came free with my cell phone. |
I have Allstate insurance and they will only cover it for free if it doesn't need to be fully replaced. Aka, only Rock chips/cracks on glass are only covered. I would have to pay a deductible for this repair, which with my deductible cost, makes this repair come out of my pocket. Sucks

All of the used replacement windows I see online don't have the clips anymore, as it appears they have to be broken when the window piece is removed. Would I have to buy this whole piece brand new from Subaru? Or would I be okay to buy used and the shop would be find installing that way?

Yes, your best option is just to buy one and have professional shop install.
I would check with your insurance again about how much it is to add no deductible glass coverage for future problems. Most are really cheap, $5-$10 a month. One big rock in the windshield that causes a crack that cannot be repaired and it pays for itself. |
Have you gone by Subaru and just asked how much they would charge to fix it? Or a glass shop? Or a bodyshop?
Glass repairs on a current production vehicle are generally pretty affordable, and I don't think many people would tackle it themselves. Rather than buy used off ebay and not get all the parts needed originally I'd just go to the dealer and see if there is a huge cost difference. |
you can always use a trash bag and some duct tape

And what happened to you just sucks. I'm currently designing a program that will rid the world of the evil, the useless, the drunks, and the good news is that it will reduce the current population by about 4 billion. Unfortunately, this board is not unaffected. Tcoat, humfrz, and geezerbrzeezer, amongst others, will no longer soil 86dom with their 'I've been around forever and seen and done everything' blather. Problem solved. WTF. I'm geezerbrzeezer. Recalculating, socks off to allow toecalcs, where the fuck is my abacus and slide rule. New equation - current population minus evil minus useless / carry the drunks = Okay, I'm safe. Whew! Okay, seriously, all joking aside, do not do this yourself. Talk to your dealer. And, it just sucks. Period. |

YIKES! @geezerbrzeezer ......I sure hope you get your meds sorted out soon ...... :eyebulge: humfrz |
Looking at that pic makes me sick to my stomach. This is why I want to move into the woods with the bears and rabbits. Stupid people.

Ha, nice try but look at where that car is. It's closely surrounded by trees. Why is it even there? Most likely some dumb person drove it into the woods after stealing and ditching it.
Then the bear was just looking through it trying to find clues as to the car belongs to to notify them to the location of their stolen vehicle. Then obviously his large bear claws not intended to manipulate dumb people mechanisms like glovebox knobs and door handles, slowly destroyed the car's contents while the bear was just trying to help. Crap, you were right. The bear was being a jerk: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_RDYeQpZzM"]Joyriding bear trashes car - YouTube[/ame] |
