Making my fr-s louder
Hi,
So as I say on my title, I want to make my fr-s louder. I am not looking for change in horsepower, torque dip or anything else but a little bit of exhaust noise. I didn't plan on doing any modification to my exhaust, but the more I drive my car the more I'd like to make it louder. This may insult some people, why make it louder if it's not for hp or to cancel the torque dip, please don't go to hard on this topic. So my question would really be more about the unequal length headers. 1: do they fit correctly on the oem over pipe or do I need to change the over pipe, and if I do, will the over pipe fit the mid pipe, and so on. I wish to change as little as I can of the exhaust. 2: do they make an obnoxious amount of noise or does it make more noise but not the kind of noise you'll get pulled over every stop for. I know this is asking a lot but I really want to change only one part or two if they come as a bundle type of thing. If you think that to make my car a bit louder you'd change something else over the headers like the overpipe or the front pipe or the mid pipe or the axle back or a combination of those please feel free to tell me your advice. I am really looking for advice here. I was also wondering if an aftermarket overpipe would change the noise and fit on oem headers and mid pipe. Thanks already Simon:burnrubber: |
If you're just looking for louder, get a catback or an axleback.
Basically everything but some of the ACE headers will mate to the factory overpipe. The aforementioned ACE headers that don't mate to the factory overpipe come with their own overpipe. Changing the headers only will make the car a bit louder, and add some of that Subaru burble. However, without a tune, you will have to deal with the check engine light if you go with catless headers. For other information: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81493 |

https://shop.namelessperformance.com...paign=products (I'd recommend the 2.5" piping and 5" mufflers) See, how easy that was ...... :) humfrz |
For just a bit louder just about any simple catback system will work just fine. You may even find that it isn't a volume increase you are looking for but a change in tone. I have the TRD catback and although it is only about 10 decibels louder than stock it has a great deep tone that is way better than what it comes with. Changing headers or over pipes and eliminating cats may be overkill if just looking for sound.

As for volume and how sound quality goes the catback is going to control that. Go to youtube and listen to some sound clips, this will give you a good idea. Also, check some reviews and such on here for sound descriptions. Some will be loud but raspy and some will be mild but deep and some will be a combination of those. If you just want loud replace the stock muffler with a Berk Technologies muffler delete or the like. Use that as a reference to look for others if you dont like that kind.
Frontpipe and overpipe will add to the volume just a little but if you do get one without a resonator you will have lots of drone in the cabin. Some people dont care about this, I do. Header will mostly change the sound type and not really volume. Equal length will stay will the sound you have now. A Unequal length will give you the boxer rumble that you here with WRX and STI. Keep in mind that as you delete mufflers, resonators, and cats you will also be adding drone and rasp. Drone can be very irritating when at cruising speeds and sometimes cause head aches. |
A header is more for performance than sound. It is one of the more difficult parts of the exhaust to change. If you want simple to do and loud, get a Berk dual exit muffler delete. I got mine used and mounted it with a screwdriver, wd40 and a ratchet (14mm socket? I always forget ) in the parking lot in 5 minutes. It's loud.
Also, to make the car louder and generally sound better get an intake with an open filter like the Weapon R Secret Weapon intake. With a Berk and a Weapon R you'll have sweet noise from both ends. |
Check out your local FT86 club if you have one in your area. Meet up with the club when they have meets and listen to whatever catback exhaust systems they have. Youtube videos are ok to hear exhaust clips but IMHO listening to them in person is better.
Invidia N1 is loud as well as Tomei 60s single exhaust. Just my 2 cents. ;) |
Thanks to everyone for all the great answers! From what I got I'll definetly won't be touching the headers. I really like the subaru rumble but for now I'm looking for simple and easy. From what I get, catback exhaust and open air filter intake might be what I'll be moving froward to.
Again big thanks to everyone. I have another question now, from what I see a catback exhaust is a system with a midpipe and a muffle, and axle back system is basically a muffler or a muffler delete as some suggested. Now if I'd be willing to go with an axle back system with a muffler (I mean no muffler delete so that the sound is still quiet) what should I go for. Also would an axle back system be worth it if it's just for sound? I'll be going on youtube, ft86club forum and other places to see ratings on those axle back system that ft86 factory are selling but I was wondering you're advice. Thanks already Simon |
What's your budget? If you have lots of cash to spend get a Perrin, Invidia Q300 (not that much louder than stock unless you add a header later) or Greddy catback.
Of get a Invida N1 which is louder than stock but lower in price. ;) |

Okay so I went and did some research and I'll definetly be changing to an axle back. Does anyone have stories about axle back exhaust that crawled out of there car and killed them when they slept or is it a good option?
Thanks again for the great responses. And about that open air intake, I don't want to start a debat on that I'll be doing some research but I am aware of the hot air intake I've been on mighty car mods |
Invidia N1 is the catback you're looking for. Or go with a Tomei, it's lighter but probably a littler more expensive, I haven't looked at prices lately.

If you don't want to actually buy a new exhaust I highly recommend a muffler delete. I had one on my car before I put on my N1 and it sounded great but wasn't to loud. You certainly still noticed the difference in sound though. I still have it if you want it. I don't have the gasket but it comes with an exhaust hanger. Pm me if you want to buy it.

bought a greddy revolution RS myself. still hasn't arrived, but I'm preparing myself for a lifetime of drone and impaired hearing.
