Reason I asked is when I was a kid there was a hardware store at the corner of Yonge and Sheppard in North York that was in the same location since the late 1800's called Cruikshanks. I remember hearing the old man was still there past age 100 minding the store. Your description matched up!

No this one is in London in a very old section of town. Maybe it has something to do with working in hardware stores?
