Totaled my FR-S / why you should have a dashcam

I was watching the car in front of me and didn't see the guy coming from the right. Considering how long I had a green I shouldn't have worried. Notice the lack of sounds of a skid from him, although he does honk at me! He didn't speak English, and a coworker that stopped had difficulty translating what he said, but he claimed his brakes didn't "grab". He didn't have a license either, although somehow has insurance. FYI, when the first light you see goes green, the second one you see goes green as well, so his was red for about nine seconds.

I've got two fractured ribs from probably hitting the center console. They hurt as much as people say they do. I don't recommend it for anyone.

No witnesses stopped, and his insurance started to claim I may be partially at fault, but changed their tune when they saw the videos. Please, get yourself a dashcam. Mine's just a (relatively) cheap A118 aka B40, but they work well for their purpose. https://dashcamtalk.com/ has lots of useful info.

Part 2 (below) is just me groaning. I didn't bother merging the two video files together since I've have better things to do like find a new car since mine (2015 Hot Lava) is totaled. I ended up with a new 2016 in Oceanic. It's not Hot Lava, but it will do. I got a good deal and didn't want to wait for the '17 cars to come in with their higher prices.

Sorry to hear about your accident. You can see him barreling down the road just before the accident. I hope you're completely cleared of any responsibility. Another twin bites the dust :sigh:

Yes, it bothers me that I didn't see him. I was watching the car in front since sometimes they take the left turn lane in the median but go straight at the second light. Also, his car may have been partially hidden by the A pillar. If I was the first car in line I would have been looking to the right instead of straight.

The conversation with his insurance company was interesting. After hearing that he said it was probably his fault, but then again maybe the light was yellow when he entered the intersection, she started to suggest I was to blame because I was turning left. I then asked if she wanted to see the video. After viewing and saying "I see", "Oh my" a few times, she said they would take 100% liability. $100 worth of dashcam and microsd card just saved me a lot of hassle and possibly higher insurance.

Woah. Listening to that relaxing music and then boom.

Hope your recovery goes smooth!

After almost being run over by lifted trucks, sideswiped by minivans, and run off the road by one too many Priuses, (also being exposed to the Russian dash cam vids), I bought the beefier version of your cam - Street Guardian SG9665GC - some time last year.

Simply to protect me in cases of doubt, if this were to ever happen to me. I read stories of "oh, that person drives a fancy looking car! He must have contributed to the accident somehow!"

Figured to just order a Thinkware F50 for now so that I can just have something at the moment because of your thread. I've been trying to find a dash cam that met all my requirements (some what unrealistic) for over 6 months now. Was also 100 bucks shipped as well. Now just waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

Hope you heal up quickly.

Drivers like these get on my nerves... I've purchased my whole family dashcams after being exposed to numerous close encounters.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Godspeed on the new 2016 too.

@humfrz the wire tucks nice under the front edge of the headliner then under the forward edge of the a pillar trim on down, that's what i did for my blackvue 2 cam system

YXEBears 09-14-2016 02:33 AM

op, glad you are ok!!

Impureclient 09-14-2016 02:52 AM

Yeah, I have a cart full of stuff on Amazon right now and I am going back in there and researching which one to buy before making the order.
Front and back one just in case the idiot comes up from behind too.
